A Microservice-based architecture divides software systems into many small services which can be deployed independently. Every team works on its own Microservices and is thus decoupled from other teams. This allows to easily scale agile processes. The modularization into Microservices protects the system against architecture decay. Consequently, systems based on Microservices stay maintainable in the long term. In addition, legacy systems can be migrated to Microservices without having to change the legacy code. Moreover, Continuous Delivery is easier to implement in Microservice-based systems. The book is translated from German.
What Readers Say
This is what readers say about the original German edition of the book:
Surprisingly, the best book on Microservices is in German: "Microservices" by @ewolff (Matthias Fritschi)
For IT topics I usually prefer English literature, but I really recommend "Continuous Delivery" and "Microservices" by @ewolff. (Peter Storch)
Content
Eberhard Wolff's book offers a comprehensive introduction to Microservices. It covers:
- Advantages and disadvantages of the Microservice approach
- Microservices vs. SOA (Service-oriented Architecture)
- The architecture of Microservice-based systems
- The architecture of individual Microservices
- Impact on project organization, operation, testing and deployment
- Nanoservices
The book explains technology-neutral concepts and architectures which can be implemented with various technologies. As an example a concrete Java technology stack is shown with Spring Boot, the Netflix stack and Spring Cloud.
On the basis of many examples and concrete scenarios you will learn how Microservices can be used as effectively as possible. You will also get suggestions how to deepen what you have learned through your own experiments.

Great overview about the topic!
By Oliver Gierke
There's no way around the topic of Microservices in discussions about software architecture these days. With "Microservices — Flexibel Software Architectures", Eberhard Wolff provides a decent overview about it. The first part of the book describes the big picture: putting Microservices into context, driving forces that might urge you into this architectural style, the resulting effects on the overall architecture as well as differences to the the topic of SOA.
The larger middle part elaborates on how to implement Microservices: general technical properties, the role of Domain-Driven Design, integration of and communication between services, testing and deployment aspects of them. Especially the latter nicely connects to Eberhard's book "Continuous Delivery" (in German) which is recommended if you'd like to dive into that topic. The section is concluded with a sample implementation based on the Spring stack (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud) and Docker — something that's been missing from other books on the topic today. Beyond that other technologies are discussed and put into context as potential solution candidates.
All in all a really great book for everyone who wants to get an overview about the topic in general. Some rare sections feel a bit fragmented, though. So in case you're into the verbose realms of Eric Evans' "Domain-Driven Design" you might consider this one a lot more to the point.
A very great idea are the "Try yourself and experiment" blocks at the ends of every chapter, that raise questions related to the topic just discussed with which the reader can actually take the just gained knowledge and take it into their own project contexts. Also a couple of anecdotes of fellow developers back the content of the book with experiences gained in real-world projects.

Essential Reference on Microservice Architecture
By Dexter Bradshaw
Comprehensive book on Microservice architectures. I think the author did a good job in nailing down both the definition and motivation of a microservice. The writing is a bit dry and repetitive with extremely simplistic examples. Formatting and diagramming could be improved in addition to the author's writing style. These are just aesthetic s and should not prevent you from picking up a copy.
