About the Author

Matt Neuburg started programming computers in 1968, when he was 14 years old, as a member of a literally underground high school club, which met once a week to do timesharing on a bank of PDP-10s by way of primitive teletype machines. He also occasionally used Princeton University's IBM-360/67, but gave it up in frustration when one day he dropped his punch cards. He majored in Greek at Swarthmore College, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1981, writing his doctoral dissertation (about Aeschylus) on a mainframe. He proceeded to teach Classical languages, literature, and culture at many well-known institutions of higher learning, most of which now disavow knowledge of his existence, and to publish numerous scholarly articles unlikely to interest anyone. Meanwhile he obtained an Apple IIc and became hopelessly hooked on computers again, migrating to a Macintosh in 1990. He wrote some educational and utility freeware, became an early regular contributor to the online journal TidBITS, and in 1995 left academe to edit MacTech Magazine. He is also the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide. In August 1996 he became a freelancer, which means he has been looking for work ever since. He is the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, both for O'Reilly & Associates.

A good book that contains deep knowledge, but marred by the author's trouble with teaching.
By Tom W.
In the book, the author uses a lot of examples from his own apps to illustrate. This is good because we get to see how the feature is used in the real world. Those examples, however, involve advanced features that will not be talked about. As a result, the explanation may confuse rather than clarify. Even with straight forward topics, the author's explanation can be confusing. For example in the Protocol section, so much explanation is just unnecessary, unorganized, or simply doesn't make sense to be there. Those words/sentences/paragraphs/sections, if ignored, often result in less confusion and with almost no loss of information. Also, when the author tries to explain, often it seems that he just writes down whatever comes to his mind. It's like even though every sentence/paragraph is about the same topic, they can be incoherent to each other (read: random). So, be prepared to go on a journey, as the author takes you around in circles. At the end of your journey (read: each paragraph/section/chapter), maybe you will learn something, but oftentimes you will not, and end up even more confused. But by far the most difficult thing reading the book is that, despite his best effort, the author has trouble explaining/teaching/writing. I am still dumbfounded by how the author is able to make a very simple concept so confusing. A tutorial book should do the exact opposite -- make confusing concepts easy. Good thing I already knew most topics in the book, otherwise it will be difficult to get something out of this book. (The same applies to the author's other book: "Programming iOS.")

Having said that, the book is still a 3 star. There are valuable information in this book that simply isn't available anywhere else. To benefit from this book though, you should already be familiar with the topics in the book. This way, as you read through it, you will be able to pick up the few things you did not already know, and dismiss the rest. That is the only way to get through it. I have benefited greatly from this book, and I wish the author/publisher would maybe have an editor to re-write the author's future books. And then we will all be able to benefit from the author's vast knowledge.

Solid book with some flaws.
By Simon Phillips
Solid book with some flaws. This book is OK. It is hard to follow in places and uses too many words to describe simple things (verbose). Otherwise quite OK and useful for learning iOS 8 programming (with Swift) basics.

Deep knowledge, not for beginners
By A. Khromov
Let me first say that the other reviews are correct. You will find invaluable information found nowhere else IF you have at least an intermediate understanding of iOS and the patience to absorb the knowledge being taught.

I had already a good understanding of Swift (and Obj-C), and yes I read each page very carefully. But the gems the author reveals can't be found even in Apple's documentation, or easily elsewhere.

You are paying to learn from his hard won experience as both an app developer and a professional teacher. If you want fast answers, or hand holding, or an app driven guide, this is not the book for you.

However, if you want to gain a really deep understanding of what iOS 8 programming is all about, then get this book and read it very slowly, carefully, and think about what is being taught.

The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America, by Andrés Reséndez

A landmark history — the sweeping story of the enslavement of tens of thousands of Indians across America, from the time of the conquistadors up to the early 20th century

Since the time of Columbus, Indian slavery was illegal in much of the American continent. Yet, as Andrés Reséndez illuminates in his myth-shattering The Other Slavery, it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. There was no abolitionist movement to protect the tens of thousands of natives who were kidnapped and enslaved by the conquistadors, then forced to descend into the “mouth of hell” of eighteenth-century silver mines or, later, made to serve as domestics for Mormon settlers and rich Anglos.
Reséndez builds the incisive case that it was mass slavery, more than epidemics, that decimated Indian populations across North America. New evidence, including testimonies of courageous priests, rapacious merchants, Indian captives, and Anglo colonists, sheds light too on Indian enslavement of other Indians — as what started as a European business passed into the hands of indigenous operators and spread like wildfire across vast tracts of the American Southwest.

The Other Slavery reveals nothing less than a key missing piece of American history.  For over two centuries we have fought over, abolished, and tried to come to grips with African-American slavery.  It is time for the West to confront an entirely separate, equally devastating enslavement we have long failed truly to see.

Review
“Reséndez corrects a blind spot in our understanding of North American history and illuminates mechanisms by which present-day versions of the practice endure.”—The New Yorker

"This book is, arguably, one of the most profound contributions to North American history published since Patricia Nelson Limerick's "Legacy of Conquest" and Richard White's "The Middle Ground." But it's not necessary to be into history to understand its power: Our world is still the world Reséndez so eloquently anatomizes." —Los Angeles Times

"No other book before has so thoroughly rleated the broad history of Indian slavery in the Americas, and not just its facts but the very reason it has been overlooked." —San Francisco Chronicle

"Reséndez is adept at untangling the intertribal slave trade, as well as the pernicious behavior of white settlers in northern California."—Philadelphia Inquirer

"With his new book, Reséndez joins a small but growing group of historians reexamining the scope and nutre of slavery in the Southwest and Native America."—Santa Fe New Mexican

“Every now and then a new book comes along that throws a switch on our historical valences and makes us see ourselves anew. The Other Slavery is one such book. Much as Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee did when it first appeared in the early 1970s, Andrés Reséndez's carefully sifted work fundamentally reshapes our understanding of a great enduring mystery: What really accounts for the swift and tragic demise of our continent's indigenous peoples?”
—Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder and In the Kingdom of Ice

“In The Other Slavery Andrés Reséndez retells a vast section of Native American and North American history by putting forced labor in its multiple forms at the center. The result is a revealing, tragic, and heartbreaking history.”
—Richard White, Margaret Byrne Professor of American History, Stanford University

"The Other Slavery is a necessary work that occupies a loaded historical landscape; Reséndez keeps a deliberate scholarly distance from the material, bringing forth evidence and constructing careful — even conservative — arguments. But that evidence speaks for itself, and the horrors quietly pile up."
— NPR.org

"We all know that Christopher Columbus and his successors enslaved the natives in the New World. Reséndez (History/Univ. of California, Davis; A Land So Strange: The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca, 2009, etc.) exposes the broad brush that the "other slavery" wielded. The extinction of the indigenous peoples of America is usually written off as the effect of diseases introduced by Spanish soldiers and colonists. Not so, says the author; it took only 60 years after Columbus' discovery for a cataclysmic population collapse. They died from slavery, overwork, and famine. Reséndez examines the methods of enslavement, from the 15th-century Caribbean to 19th-century California, and his approachable style eases reading difficult personal stories of slavery and cruelty. That there are so many individual stories illustrates the author's wide-ranging research. Columbus initially intended to transport Indians to Europe in a "reverse middle passage," but he was thwarted by Ferdinand and Isabella's opposition to slavery as well as the need for labor in the mines. In 1542, the Spanish crown passed the New Laws, outlawing slavery, and procuradores, specialist lawyers, were appointed to sue for freedom of those illegally enslaved. Reséndez shows how inconvenient laws were bypassed. First, the parameters of who could be enslaved were not necessarily strictly defined. While the royals insisted their people be treated as vassals, those who enslaved them just changed the nomenclature and methods. Colonists were granted encomiendas, grants of Indians to overlords, or repartimientos, compulsory labor drafts. The growth of peonage—debt slavery—provided even more slave labor. Eventually, Mexican silver mines turned to New Mexico to supply slaves, which gives the author the opportunity to provide the history of peoples in the Southwest. As the Mormons bought slaves to "civilize" them, the Spanish initially enslaved people to "Christianize" them. Both merely created an underclass. This eye-opening exposure of the abuse of the indigenous peoples of America is staggering; that the mistreatment continued into the 20th century is beyond disturbing."
—Kirkus

"Reséndez (A Land So Strange), a professor of history at the University of California, Davis, details the ways in which Native Americans were subjected to enslavement throughout the Americas. When the U.S. gained California and other southwestern territories from Mexico in 1848, it also acquired a significant number of Indian slaves who were “entrapped by a distinct brand of bondage… perpetrated by colonial Spain and inherited by Mexico.” This form of enslavement ran parallel to that endured by people of African descent throughout colonial Latin America and, Reséndez argues, generated an even more disastrous population loss. He notes the ways in which the “other slavery” defies simple definitions, relating how it was so widespread and deeply rooted in the economy and society of the Americas that it lasted even longer than that of African slavery, persisting in the guise of debt peonage into the 20th century. Emphasizing the variety of experiences of unfree labor suffered over five centuries by individuals from communities as culturally diverse and geographically separate as the Maya, the Apache, and indigenous Caribbeans, Reséndez vividly recounts the harrowing story of a previously little-known aspect of the histories of American slavery and of encounters between indigenes and invaders. "
— Publisher's Weekly

"Today, with the complex and myriad effects of globalization frequently in the news, human trafficking has managed to endure. The Other Slavery both reminds and cautions: Man’s inhumanity to man is still making history."
— Book Page

“At a time when we are struggling to come to grips with the legacy of our long-time African slavery experience, it is only right that we should also acknowledge and inform ourselves of the human tragedy endured by the indigenous people of this hemisphere from Columbus’ first contact to the present.”
— New York Journal of Books

Outstanding!
By Christina Paul
The story of the Americas is a rich one. However, there is a vast difference between what the majority of us are taught in schools and the reality. America, be it the United States, Mexico, Central and South America or the Caribbean Islands were all built on slavery. The idea of slavery conjures up images of Africans forcibly and horrifically taken from their homelands in Africa and imported to be forced labor here. What is not discussed is that there were long before the import of the first African slaves to the Americas, and very long after they were emancipated, the slavery of Indigenous Peoples of various Indian Nations for the longest time. This book, from the introduction onward, is a detailed and heart-wrenching account that “Indian slavery never went away, but rather coexisted with African slavery from the sixteenth all the way through to the late nineteenth century.”

While we really can’t compare and contrast the number of African slaves (some 12.5 million) to the estimated numbers of Indian slaves (between 2.5 to 5 million), the stain and the horror was no less. Even with the addition of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments that essentially abolished slavery in the United States, the wording made it possible to continue the enslavement of Indians through the whole of the nineteenth century and in some areas into more remote areas in the early portion of the twentieth century. The language contained within those two Amendments, according to Resendez, was made to focus more on slaves of African decent and left out those who were Indians. It allowed Indian slavery to be a well kept secret, but something that still went on. Even today, in parts of central and South America, the practice does continue - in the form of debt peonage or labor camps for those who have allegedly broken laws of the Dominant Culture that Indigenous People are forced to live under.

As a woman of Indigenous ancestry, in our family we were taught a great many things about the history of the United States from an Indigenous perspective. Even the knowledge that is handed down among families and cultures does not touch on some of the horrific details and systematic practices of slavery of Indios or Indians. In college, I had a fantastic professor that taught us in detail about the caste structure in Spanish-held areas in the Americas from the days of the Conquistidores. Penensulares (Elites), the Creoles, the Mestizos, the Mulattoes, the Indios, the Zambos, and the Africans. The level of human exploitation went far beyond and for a longer period of time than I even had an idea about. It is good to be informed and to have someone spend so much time assembling information that is spotty at best and putting together a picture that even Indigenous People from Nations effected such as the Apache, Zuni, and other Southwestern Tribes as well as how entire vast populations were wiped out not just because they most often fell victim to diseases brought by the European invaders that they had no defenses against, but in dying of these diseases there was an ever increasing demand to replace those Indians that were put into slavery.

Andres Resendez has made a book that should be required reading in high school and college. The author insists that this book is not meant to be an end-all-be-all on the topic of the Other Slavery, but I think it comes pretty close. The Other Slavery really should be on every reading list for anyone who is interested in Native American history.

The Other Slavery is a sobering book. It is at times hard to read. I found myself crying and angry and most often just completely flabbergasted at the sheer obliviousness that we as a country seem to have when it comes to the topic of human trafficking, how rife it was and has been, and just how long it’s been going on. We as a country are complicit in what happened and we need to begin acknowleging that fact. There were things I was never taught both by family or in school and Resendez outlines various rebellions and historical points with so much detail. As difficult as this book was to read for me as an Indigenous woman, if I could give it ten stars, I would.

Shining a Spotlight on Shadow Slavery
By ck
Sixty-two years after the U.S. Supreme Court declared desegregation illegal, parts of our nation are still coming to grips with the essential inhumanity of black slavery and the silent creeping prejudice that remains.

With “The Other Slavery,” Andrés Reséndez summons our attention to an equally shameful heritage America shares with other nations in the “New World,” the four-century-long enslavement and servitude of Indians.

Enslavement of these two very different groups existed side by side for three centuries, but as Reséndez points out, the very legality of African slavery made it quite visible even as it was occurring and today in the historical record.

By contrast, he writes, Indian slavery was largely illegal and “its victims toiled, quite literally, in dark corners and behind locked doors.” Thus, these people were robbed of their freedom while they lived, and denied general acknowledgment of their suffering after they died. Reséndez estimates that 2.5 million to 5 million Indians were taken into slavery in the New World. Of these, he believes that 147,000 to 340,000 were from North America, excluding Mexico. (He posits that Indian enslavement in Mexico and Central America comprised an additional 590,000 to 1.4 million people.)

I gravitated to the section of the book in which Reséndez addresses slavery and servitude after the end of the Civil War and found it both clearly substantiated and heartbreaking. The scale and scope were devastating, as were the uneven Federal attempts to eradicate it. Here, as throughout the book, Reséndez’s notes provide amplification and names of resources students/readers can seek out for further information.

Reséndez writes with great clarity and specificity, and provides rich context throughout. His statements are buttressed by academic research and data, as well as a notes section that is almost 100 pages long. Maps provide amplification and visual context. This book is difficult to read not because of its composition, but because of its content. Nonetheless, it is appropriate for high school and college students, as well as for those who would like to know more about this aspect of history.

A Must Read
By Darcia Helle
When you hear or see the word 'slavery', what comes to mind? As Andres Resendez points out, the vast majority of us will envision African slaves, over-crowded and disease-ridden boats, and southern plantations. While that is a tragic, inexcusable part of American history, Africans were not the only people enslaved during the early, tumultuous years of America's beginnings. The Native Americans who'd roamed the country freely, who'd called the land their own for centuries before Europeans appeared, suddenly found themselves ripped away from their homeland and families, bought, sold, and traded. This occurred in staggering numbers, over a period of centuries.

This book is exceptionally well researched, yet it does not read like a dry textbook. Yes, it's a fairly academic read, in that it's rich in detail, but the writing is alive with texture and emotion. Resendez takes us back to an America most of us wouldn't recognize, to a time when owning a person was somehow justified as a Christian act of kindness. People disguised greed and bigotry as a necessary and righteous behavior, enabling themselves to steal Indian children and put them to work in the name of God.

Resendez takes us from the early struggles with Mexico, up through the Civil War. Most of the focus here is on the American Southwest and Mexico, then over to the American West. He highlights the country's dichotomy in fighting a Civil War to free African slaves, while continuing the enslave a disturbing number of Native Americans. In closing, Resendez briefly discusses our world history of slavery, and how it has never gone away but only evolved into something else to fit the circumstances and skirt the law.

This is a powerful, well written, disturbing, must-read book that should be in every school, a part of every history curriculum, and read by every adult. We need to acknowledge our problematic past if we have any hope of preventing a disastrous future.

Good overview but...
By Fusun Turkmen
This is a good and up-to-date summary of various international organizations, including their respective histories, structures, mechanisms and shortcomings. However, the word "theories" is somewhat misguiding in the title as the analysis of the subject through IR theories remains rather superficial while conceptual dichotomies (i.e. sovereignty and globalization, power and interdependence etc.) predominate. This is not a bad approach at all but the title should have reflected it.

I sent this to my granddaughter, for a belated Birthday gift. She called and thanked me when she received it. She was so happy to receive it because I found out she was a big fan of this graphic novel. I did call her before I ordered it to see how far she was in the series. Once I knew that I ordered the one she needed next.

Railgun is FINALLY back
By Zeck
It's time for a break. After the showdown--and let's be honest, dark revelations about Academy City--in the Daihasei festival story, Railgun 11 feels like a much deserved vacation for all of our characters. Naturally, there's an undertone in the story that hints at the fact that, once again, Mikoto and her friends are going to get sucked into another big conspiracy, but not in this book. This book is packed with fun, feel-good stories, and it doesn't end on a cliffhanger that will make you curse how long it takes for these books to come out.

The story starts with one of Shokuhou Misaki AKA Queen's followers (I believe her name is Harusaki, but it's never actually stated) being friendly with Mikoto and discussing what they should do to get a limited edition Gekota item. Thankfully, the artist and author realized that people are probably not going to remember Harusaki, or even recognize her because her hair is different, so we get a single panel flashback showing who she is. She was one of the two girls from the last story that was assigned by Shokuhou to keep an eye on Mikoto, and one of the girls that Mikoto threatened to kill if they didn't get out of her way.
Seeing their conversation, Shokuhou makes a comment about how the two girls are being friendly, and it quickly devolves into a fight between Railgun and Queen, much to Harusaki's dismay. As a way to apologize, Harusaki gives Mikoto a strange card, and then chases after her Queen.

Thankfully, Saten is around and explains exactly what the card is: a dream called, called Indian Poker. It allows a person to experience another person's dream and they are all the rage now. Curious, Mikoto tries out the card when she goes to bed, and sure enough, it works. She experiences Harusaki's fantasy: a castle staffed by Gekotas. Unfortunately, the card's dream is a reflection of the creator's desire, and a castle needs a ruler. And since Harusaki views Shokuhou as Queen, guess who is in charge of the castle that Mikoto is a servant in?

That's mostly what this volume is about. Cute, funny stories that feel like a break from the darkness of the last few volumes. Here's a breakdown of what to look forward to:

Naturally, some people can control their dreams better than others, and thus can make better cards (D through S rank, S being the highest). And since Academy city is filled with middle, high, and college students, obviously some of them are going to have fantasies about certain people. When Mikoto and Shokuhou overhear that someone is selling dream cards of THEM, it leads to an alliance that frightens Harusaki.

Kuroko and Uiharu get the bulk of this volume. A new app is out, and it seems to predict the future of tragedies in the city. Curious, the two girls beginning looking into it, and when Kuroko's teleport ability saves a girl from one such prediction, the two Judgement officers come across a grade school boy named Miyama. He's able to see the future, but despite his best efforts, he hasn't been able to find anyone who can alter the events he sees--until he meets Kuroko and her teleporting. Together, they team up to stop a bunch of random accidents, but when a fire breaks out in the middle of a part, it turns out that Miyama has been hiding something from the two girls.

Speaking of Miyama, even he gets a little fun chapter. While waiting at a bus stop, he meets Musujime Awaki (are you keeping all these names straight? No? Good, me neither). For those wondering, she' the teleport that beat the snot out of Kuroko in Index, and in return, Accelerator beat the snot out of her to stop her from restarting the Sisters Program. Anyway, the encounter is hilarious, as Miyama keeps doing things that cause Awaki to nearly lose her composure, seeing as she's a shotacon--a character who is attracted to young boys.

Finally--and this is the highlight of the book if you ask me--Mikoto isn't done teaming up with enemies. While out on a stroll, she comes across another card dealer and one of his customers. The customer is Kinuhata Saiai, a member of ITEM (she's the girl that wears a hood that knocked out Shinobu in the Sisters story after Shinobu tried to shoot her in the arm). Mikoto doesn't recognize her, having never met her in person, but Saiai recognizes the Railgun. Thankfully, Saiai plays it cool, thinking she's off duty today anyway, and continues looking at cards to buy. Mikoto is about to walk away as well, until the dealer offers a special S-ran card: The Bust Upper. Seeing as both girls are self conscious about their chests--or lack thereof--they get into a scuffle that causes all of the dealer's cards to get mixed up. The result: the two girls buy all the cards, and together begin diving into different dreams, hoping to find the Bust Upper and agreeing to share it once they do. What follows is a hilarious tour of two girls jumping from dream to dream of familiar characters from Railgun and Index, and all the dreams are about girls with bigger sizes.
Oh, and the ending result of this final story is hilarious.

All that being said, we are given hints that something bigger is going on. A few students who have been using Indian Poker have suddenly fallen into comas (again, which means Saten's probably going to be in trouble, again, because she's devouring these cards), and Mikoto has a weird dream about a strange girl while she and Saiai are looking for Bust Upper. This girl hints that something big is coming, but if Mikoto deals with, an even bigger threat will emerge.

Bottom Line: This series doesn't come out fast enough. I'm happy to have more adventures to read about everyone's favorite Level 5 and her friends, but we had to wait over a YEAR for this one. How long will we need to wait for the next one?
Anyway, fans of the series should pick it up. Fans who like the goofier side of the series should REALLY pick it up.

Solid volume
By L.T.T.
It was a fun break from previous volumes where there was more tension. There were more Kuroko and Uiharu this volume, but the stories were still satisfying. When Misaka has her appearances in the beginning and ending chapters, they are really funny chapters. I feel that these stories are building up to something bigger in the next volume, so I'm waiting for the exciting developments in the 12th volume.

Review
I accidentally read Tao Lin's table of contents as a poem; it's a hilarious poem and it hooked me right away. This is also how his poems work--they are aggressively mundane. But behind that aggressive pose those poems are real and free. And really funny. There's a confidence in them that not only undercuts their surface pose, but makes that pose something meaningful. --Matthew Rohrer, author of A Green Light

you are a little bit happier than i am has the energy and oddness of a thing that is rising very fast that is not supposed to be rising, or that is supposed to be rising but for a moment you forget that, and for a moment this ordinary thing looks very strange and exciting--sun, ball, airplane, tree. That is Tao Lin's poemish pieces. --Deb Olin Unferth, author of Revolution

Tao Lin's you are a little bit happier than i am is poetry unadorned, offering a stark portrait of our modern world and its alienation. Pulling no punches, and drawing the reader in with seemingly simple statements, Tao Lin is one of the most inventive and insightful authors I have read this year. --www.largeheartedboy.com

Tao Lin's poetry collection gracefully proves the theorem that nothing can be truly sad if it isn t also funny...Lin's is a harsh, insular world of sadness (the word appears countless times throughout the slim volume), hopelessness and despondency. But for every ounce of drear and self-pity, Lin inserts an arresting aside: this poem has all this between each stanza / ...someone on the largest dose of tylenol cold in the history of the world falling off a sixty-story building at night." --Jeb Gleason-Allured, Timeout Chicago

Reading Tao Lin's you are a little bit happier than i am (Winner of the 2005 December Prize) is reminiscent of covertly eavesdropping on a private conversation over a cup of hallucinogen-spiked black coffee. The reader cannot help but feel a little like a transfixed interloper. The poems are powered by direct, confessional statements which reveal the interior life of a twenty-something year old who is an alternately suicidal and homicidal, infatuated, self-conscious and self-loathing, ambivalent observer/poet. --Aysha Somasundaram, Bookslut.com

From the Publisher
Reading Tao Lin's poetry is like looking the wrong way down Frank O'Hara's ear trumpet at a 21st century Mayakovsky IM-ing Lili Brik. It's fun, smart, manic and ecstatic; it puts on a clean shirt before it loads the gun.

I don't know what poetry is. These are poems I guess. I liked reading this book.
By Zachary D. German
I don't think I usually like poetry. I went to a poetry reading tonight and I did not enjoy it. I liked this book. It was like reading transcripts of my own thoughts. It validated my thoughts somewhat I guess, in letting me know that other people thought similar things, and that other other people were publishing transcripts of them. I think writing like this is positive in that it encourages calm reflection on one's own life through direct analysis of another's. I feel like an idiot right now. A few dollars = a whole lot more test points!
    By Robert W Metcalfe II
I've taken several firefighter civil service exams in the past, but never "studied" for them because the information topics were so easy. However, this was my first run at a police exam, and I had heard that they include memorization pieces and a few more difficult topics.

Boy am I glad I did! There are 4 practice tests, and the initial diagnostic test really opened my eyes to just how picky and tricky these questions can be. I'm normally an extremely good test-taker, but this book showed me the sly ways questions can be tweaked with just a simple word change.

Upon taking my actual exam, I was pleasantly surprised - All of the practice tests in this book are 150 questions long, my exam was only 75. The memorization exercises showed me that it wasn't as scary as I previously thought.

My real exam actually lacked a lot of what this book prepares you for (facial recognition, grammar testing, sentence ordering) so if anything, I was OVER-prepared.

Bottom line is this - if you're serious about a police career and want to do well on the exam, going through every page of this book can only help you - and for only $13 it's a steal.

    Best of luck!

    Very helpful
    By Mike Citroen
This book is phenomenal. It gives you everything that you could possibly want with a test at the beginning to see where you are, then the answer key with explanations to EVERY question, next chapter by chapter explains every type of question you will see, and finally 3 practice tests to close out the book with answer keys to get you fully prepared!

    Don't buy the Kindle version
    By khunt.803
I bought the Kindle version and that is the source of my complaints. The Kindle version does not allow flipping back and forth like a paper copy while taking the practice tests. Also, the scantron answer sheet required for the practice tests can not be printed from Kindle. The electronic version/format does not work well with this type of book. Save some frustration and buy a paper version.

The information seems good, but I don't have anything to compare it with.

    Nice!!!
By Julio Eduardo S R Simoes
I bought this one when I was planning my journey to India, where I stayed for 6 months.
Studying with it and also with a native Tamil speaker while in India I obtained a LOT of congratulatory comments from my Indian colleagues, that make me believe this is a very nice start kick to Tamil language.
Despite, it's just impossible to do what the title invites you to: learn Tamil in a month, without ever hearing it? No, not possible.

    Intro to Tamil
    By Joel Bjorling
Tamil is one of the main Indian languages. For me, understanding the grammatical details is a bit confusing because it seems to "decline" words differently from other languages. Many grammatical terms are in Tamil, which makes things somewhat difficult to pronounce or understand. This is probably one of the main texts on Tamil and it's one that you need to take your time with, step by step. Tamil has a beautiful script. It is great for calligraphy.
