About the Author
William F. Powell studied at the Art Student's Career School in New York; Harrow Technical College in Harrow, England; and the Louvre Free School of Art in Paris, France. His work has been represented in major galleries and reproduced in the form of illustrations, prints, and limited-edition collector's plates. He has been professionally involved in fine art, commercial art, and illustration for more than 45 years. His experience as an instructor includes oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, colored pencil, and pastel with subjects ranging from landscapes and seascapes to still life, portraiture, and wildlife. He holds awards for the technical side of his art, which has been used in major space and environmental programs.

Sadly, not a panacea

I was pretty excited to order this book, but now that I have it, I am not completely sure how useful it is...there are a zillion swatches with recipes, but there is so much variation in paint brands and so forth that once you have used your paints for a bit, you are better off just finding the colors yourself. Also, there is a certain subset of paint colors used, so if you have a cadmium red medium instead of a light, you are back to figuring it out yourself. I think also there's a bit too much black used to darken/dull colors. The introductory text on mixing is useful, but too short. The printing is nice and vivid.

Good book. Every artist needs for that one special color they can't make.

If you paint, you need this book. And if you teach, which I do, my students borrow it all the time in class. I won't let it go home with them though. I suggest they go on Amazon and buy their own. The hardest part is that often we don't have every color they recommend. And the colors are often called by different names by brands, but it is so helpful. One use for that special color will pay for the book. Paint is expensive and takes up space. Keeping 12-15 on hand is easier than 20-30 or 1500.

Great buy for a great book.

I had bought the single landscape book and was glad the publisher decided to combine all the books. What a savings! Since I do oils, now I can use this book for water color and acrylics if I choose. It's a great reference for portrait painting (detailing facial highlighting and skin tones) as well as still life, land and seascapes. This book has very detailed recipes for color mixtures and 2 re-usable grid pages to measure the paint need for each recipe. There's no guess work, it's been done for you. It has cut my mixing and guessing to 1/2 the time and I don't waste paint. I ordered two, one for myself and one for my instructor.

Beautiful Book

I had the opportunity to view this book in the store and it is gorgeous. Gigantic glossy photographs, many of Ralph Lauren and his family. I was waiting for this book to come out because I am a huge Ralph Lauren fan. That said, in my mind, I sort of thought this book would dissect his fashions over the past four decades. While his styles have the reputation of being timeless, the designer certainly has evolved and a book that started with his ties to his initial designs, perhaps examples of the tweed jacket he bought for his wife, etc. then moving to the polos, Blue and Black Label, Home and lifestyle, that would have made a fantastic book. This is not quite a book on the evolution of Ralph Lauren designs over the past four decades. This is more a collection of very beautiful photographs and some editorial. It is beautiful, no question. But had I purchased it sight unseen, I would have been expecting a different book, a forty year retrospective, with initial designs, runway, retail versions, fabrics, British lifestyle influences, etc.

STUNNING HUGE 14 pound book showing Mr Ralph at his best.....BUT....

First....This is an AWESOME book. No doubt about it. It is HUGE. It weights 14 1/2 pounds!!! It is really beautiful. The photos are just what you'd expect from Mr. Ralph. Sweeping, grand and elegant. There are over 700 photos..Large and small. Not a lot of text but enough to keep you well wrapped up.

BUT....Well...Really 2 buts....I am a HUGE fan of Lauren's western vintage inspired line of clothing called "RRL" or "Double RL". Have been since 1993. Was a little let down that there are only about 8 pics related to this line which Ralph admits many many times is his true passion and love in his vast empire of styles and brands.
On the upside...There are LOTS of photos from the first western collection in 1979 that was really the groundbreaking for all his RRL and Western/Roughwear/Santa Fe collections since. Many not seen in some 25 years. AA++ on that.

SECOND BUT....There are little to NO STORE photos. Inside or out of the shops. In my humble opinion...This is about 75% of Lauren's pure gift. HIS STORES!! There are unlike any other stores in the world!! Th sheer scope that each store has..It's own style depending on it's location, the accents, the style direction, etc. You can spend hours just wondering through his stores in awe. MAJOR minus in this book. DDD---

Upside again....There are many many photos NEVER published before. Most from early ad spreads. Lauren's early ads were often 15 to 20 magazine pages long...Like mini movies. Remember them all quite well from my early adulthood. Very nice to see new/old images. AAA+++

OVERALL...Excellent book. We all know Lauren could have (without any effort due to the wealth of material to draw from) split this book up into 3 or 4 or even 5 volumes. His life, the stores, the ads, the designs...hell....even the millions of dogs just used in his ads alone could fill a 200+ page coffee table book. I guess to totally cover all the Lauren aspects, you'd need a 30 pound book!

If you and Mr Ralph are very very close friends. You will WANT this book. Well worth the hefty price. Thanks Mr. Ralph for 40 years of letting us live our movies with you as the director, scripter and set designer. GREAT RIDE!!

P.S. You will need a REALLY BIG and REALLY strong coffee table for this book. Take my word.

Ralph Lauren reinvented fashion based on his vision of the past. To sum up his world in a word, it is Romance. These photos represent not only a fashion still but a pastiche of what we would like our pasts to be.
Working class or privileged, it shows a world where everyone can be proud. I rejected the naysayers who chafe at this working class guy from Long Island reminding us of Wasp and Cowboy Chic. This is Americana in all it permutations and if he becomes a billionaire in the process, isn't that American as well.

A little about Nancy...
A true romantic at heart, Nancy Corrigan is convinced there's a knight in shining armor for every woman (or man), but you won't find damsels in distress in her stories. She adores pairing alpha heroes with women strong enough to match them and bring them to their knees. She also enjoys flipping the traditional roles in romances because her motto is--love and people should never be forced to conform to anyone's norm.

She holds a degree in chemistry and has worked in research but now focuses on ensuring quality. She considers it the perfect outlet for her as she's the first to admit she has some OCD tendencies. It carries over into her writing life too. While engrossed in a novel, she has a habit of forgetting to eat and sleep. Fortunately, she's married to her own knight in shining armor who understands her oddities and loves her anyway. They reside in Pennsylvania with their three children, dog, snake and guinea pigs. Her other interests include tattoos, animals, classic cars and all things spooky and sexy.

Enjoyed more than the 1st

Since this book has been revised, I’d like to point out that you shouldn’t base your purchase solely on the “old” versions reviews. All I can say is that I didn’t see some of the issues that were brought up. In fact, I thought that this was really well written. I might even go as far as to say that I liked this one more than the first, which is unusual for me.

What a tortured soul Devin is. We got to see a little glimpse into the type of person he is in the first installment, Treasured Find, but now we REALLY get to know him and why he’s the way he is. I don’t even know if the word “tortured” is accurate enough. This poor man is…lost, at least until he meets and saves Lena.

Lena is running. Running from shifters she was told were out to do evil things to her adopted sister. Now that her family has been murdered, she’s the only one that can protect her. So what does she do? She sacrifices herself, throwing everyone off the trail, to give her sister a chance. Too bad that sacrifice almost cost her her life, at the very hands of one who saved her. But why is she so drawn to her capturer? It’s like there’s something binding them together, but she just can’t put her finger on it.

This read is JAM PACKED with nothing but awesomeness. From the first chapter you’ll be drawn into this shifter world and you won’t be able to stop herself from staying up all night to see what happens next.

Speaking of next…I’m really excited to read the next one. Mira deserves happiest too, just like her twin.

The broken Royal

This is the second book in the Royal Shifters series and a full length, complex standalone. As in book one, a cub is missing, and Devin, liaison to Shifter Affairs, is part of the recovery team that has been tipped to her location. When they reach the site, however, another shifter group is already there. In the skirmish that follows, Devin follows a human female and accidentally injures her trying to protect her. To save her life, he begins the mating bond. Only then does he realize she is not just his mate, but is his true mate.

Lena has made a promise to protect five-year-old shifter, Molly, with her life. When they are betrayed by Shifter Affairs and her parents are murdered in front of her, she acts as bait, leading the attackers away from their home so her sister, Gwen, can get Molly to safety. But as Lena attempts to evade capture, she is accidentally mauled by a lion that attacks the killers. When she awakens, she finds she's in the bed of a man set on telling her what to do. But Lena is nothing if not the very definition of stubborn. Which, it seems, only makes the Royal shifter even more intractable. Or is that just how all kitties treat their mates?

The life of Harry Houdini, the world famous "master mystifier"

This DK Biography of Harry Houdini is described as "A photographic story of a life," but I can tell you up front that it is not a collection of photographs with captions but an illustrated biography that is comparable to other volumes put out by this company. That means you will find over 100 photographs, artwork and artifacts, including photograph of his famous escapes, posters from throughout his career, and a look at things like his collection of handcuffs. For somebody like me who knows most of what they know about Houdini from the movie with Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh (and whatever television documentaries I might stumble across from time to time), this book is quite educational. Vicki Cobb tells about the life of Harry Houdini so it reads like an American success story. Born Ehrich Weiss, the kid who will become Harry Houdini leaves home at the age of 12, gets bored working in a factory, and starts practicing coin trips in his spare time. Eventually the son of poor immigrants would be selling out the theaters of Europe as the greatest magician and escape artist in the world.

To set the stage for Houdini's life, Cobb begins with a prologue, "Failure Means a Drowning Death," that talks about his performance in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 27, 1908. Having escaped from the local police station the day before, Houdini performs his "Death-Defying Mystery: Escape from a galvanized iron can filled with water and secured by massive locks." By the time you get to the part where you wonder how he did it, Cobb has you interested in how Houdini became the greatest magician of all time. Then we get to the fact of his life, with the early chapter devoted to how the Weiss family came to America, what Show Business was like in the 1890s when Weiss got started, and how the young Houdini learned his trade as a magician and taking his name from Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, his hero.

Cobb pays attention to how Houdini developed his career and you should pay attention to all of the posters that document his career: they start off with lots of text and hyperbole, but by the time he becomes famous as the "master mystifier" basically he just needed "HOUDINI" in large print. So Houdini goes from "Dime Museum Harry," to "The King of Handcuffs" and then the "Self-Liberator" who conquered Europe at the end of the century. Cobb highlights a quotation from Houdini: "The whole secret is getting the first hand free; after that it is all plain sailing." The glory days of Houdini cover him as a great self-promoter, but also pay attention to his family and his work as a scholar and author in the field of magic.

The final chapters looked at how Houdini started taking risks to come up with bigger thrills for his audiences by doing dangerous things like jumping into rivers and flying an airplane. This goes hand in hand with his great creativity (we get to the Water Torture Cell from the end of the movie "Houdini" at this point). The last stage of Houdini's career deals with not only his death defying feats, but also his debunking of mediums ("The Dead Don't Talk"), which became part of his legacy when he died on Halloween in 1926 from a ruptured appendix. Houdini had told his wife that if it were possible to speak to her from beyond the grave, he would do so, and for ten years his widow Bess attended seances on Halloween to hear the code they had agreed on as proof she was hearing from him. But it never came.

If you want to know how Houdini did it, then you will be happy to know several of his best-known tricks are explained (but not all of them) in this informative biography. Cobb emphasizes Houdini's showmanship as well as his creativity in being important to the act so young readers can better appreciate the career of somebody they will never see perform. The back of the book has a two-page timeline of key events in Houdini's life, a Bibliography of more than a dozen books, a Works Cited list, and six Webs ties that will provide more information about Houdini as well as a trio of documentaries about the master mystifier (he felt he was more than a magician and therefore favored this appellation).

Harry Houdini was born on March 24, 1874 in Budapest Hungary to Samuel and his second wife Cecilia. Samuel was a rabbi who immigrated to America. Harry and his many brothers were raised in Appleton, Wisconsin where his father served for a short time as the rabbi of a Hebrew congregation. The family was poor but the children were loved and bright. One of Harry's brothers Leo became a doctor while another brother became a magician who learned tricks from Harry. Houdini's real name was Ehrich Weiss. The budding young magician changed his name to honor his memory of the great French magician Houdon.
Harry had little schooling but enjoyed study and learning all he could about becoming a magician. Houdini soon hit the dime theatre and vaudeville circuits. He met his wife Bess, who was a Roman Catholic, at Coney Island. Bess was a great wife who assisted Harry in his stage act. The couple were childless.
Houdini was a self promoter who always contacted the local press and police to witness his legendary escapes. He was often placed nude in a jail cell to emerge as a free minutes after he had been handcuffed and locked up! Houdin was an expert on locks, handcuffs and keys to enable him to escape. He traveled and lived in Europe starring in big shows in London, Paris, Rome and even in Russia.
Houdini was a good friend of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Their friendship was frayed when Houdini exposed charlatans conducting seances approved of by the creator of the Sherlock Holmes tales. Houdini demanded honesty in his professional deals never smoking or drinking. Though short he was a superbly muscled athlete.
Houdini starred in a few Hollywood films and continued to perform throughout most of his life. He died in 1926 due to a ruptured appendix. Houdini had a vast collection of magic books and knew thousands of tricks of his mysterious trade.
Vicki Cobb has written a fine book for young adults and teens as part of the DK Biography series. The book is lavishly illustrated with a text which might be enjoyed by both young and old readers. Recommended!

Once again

Once again, Shirley Sahrmann presents a great work. I am an amateur interested in human anatomy and physical therapy, and this along with her first book are excellent resources for treating and learning about various common orthopedic ailments. A good knowledge of anatomy is required (I recommend "Anatomy of Movement". Of course, some people will criticize this work for buying in too much to the biomechanics model of pain rather than a CNS dominated model (Janda etc), and for ignoring biopsychosocial factors, but the author and associates experience suggests that correcting postural alignments can have a powerful effect on function. Two thumbs up!

Taking the next step

Shirley Sahrmann set out her theory of movement impairment in her first book in 2001. This was ground breaking work and has worked very well for me in cases of long term or insidious onset pain problems. She covered diagnosis of the shoulder/scapula, low back, and hip.

Shirley has now been joined by a very talented group of therapists/researchers to 1. fill in the acute injury diagnosis (done very simply and elegantly by identifying the part involved and then staging the point in the recovery), and 2. to establish diagnoses for the other areas of the body (neck, elbow, hand, thorax, knee, and ankle/foot.

The organization of the book is much improved with each area again getting it's own chapter, then each movement impairment is outlined with general guidelines for treatment included in an appendix after each chapter. The treatment guidelines are especially helpful since I find myself searching Sahrmann's first book through the body of the text when I need additional ideas for treatment.

Movement System Impairment Syndromes of the Extremities, Cervical and Thoracic Spines, is a long awaited and very welcome addition to, not only Sahrmann's work, but to the field of physical therapy. We need a cogent, concise, and thorough approach to describing and organizing the various injuries, pains, and function impairments that we see; that is, a diagnostic system. These books are an excellent start.

Very thorough and detailed

As a strength and conditioning coach with a limited level of A&P, this book is a little over my head, and something that I have to study for a while before I get the information I need (i.e. not a reference). I use the book to understand what my customers PTs and/or Chiropractors diagnosis are. I think her other book, "Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes" is the right book for someone like me; however, if you can afford both they work pretty well together because there are several references in this book that refer to the earlier book.
