Today the appeal of Red House seems stronger than ever. An increasing stream of visitors from all over the world turn up at the wooden gate in the red brick wall, to ask for permission to enter. An Enlightening Read!!

A Year Without Food is Ray Maor's recount of his journey to becoming a Breatharian.This is an incredible way of life, using Prana as the soul's main life force. In a true Paradigm shift, Maor debunks the idea that man must eat and drink to survive.While there are concepts I can grasp through this book, such as emotional eating, I cannot imagine successfully turning away from food as nourishment.Maor does just this. He has the blood tests and good health to back up his claims. If you are looking for a fascinating glimpse into an alternate state of health and well being, this is a must read.While I cannot see myself becoming a Breatharian, I am glad I read this book as it has challenged my ideals and concepts of "healthy". There is no denying that we as a global body are unwell. Our portion sizes are out of control and this is reflected in the rising obesity rates.I cannot help but wonder if there is a happy medium here.
Eating to be healthy but not to fill emotional holes? This is an excellent read that will open your eyes and mind to a different way of life.

This e-book review was 137 pages in length and was very interesting to read at such a discounted rate on Amazon. The main theme to this book is can human life exist or survive without food? I think that the obvious answer to anyone would be clearly and immediately, no. This book shows a man named Ray Maor take on a path of utilizing air techniques to survive. Sounds pretty crazy, huh? I thought so too. In a television production, he went eight days without food and even water. He was never alone and always watched in a secure setting. Medical doctors and others feared he would not last. This e-book is about this journey of development but also so much more. A very interesting and different read! I loved the connection between the spiritual self and the body. I believe there is a real connection. The big hit of this book is the understanding of Chi and other defined terms of spiritual guidance. I would recommend this book to anyone that is spiritual or looking for interest in the connections of the body and mind. A+ read!

My Review on "The Nazi Hunters"

This is coming from a some what knowledgable 11 year old girl, but I absolutely LOVED this book. I have always been fascinated with WWII and I finally found another book about it. I really like how it explains the capture of the less famous, but much more evil of a person, Adolf Eichmann, who I never knew existed. I also cannot believe how he stayed in hiding for 15 years until his capture. This book was a SMASHING read. I thought there was not a single part of the book that was boring or not interesting. I kept turning the pages on my iPad to see what would happen next. I can tell you, I really enjoyed this book and if you are interested in WWII and want a good book to read about it, choose this book to read. I highly recommend this book! I would also like to say thank you for writing it!

Middle School Readers will not be able to put this down!

Neal Bascomb has written a gripping account of an international effort to capture Adolf Eichmann – the SS official who basically visualized, organized, and ran the Holocaust. Eichman disappeared for over a decade and, while Europe and the U.S. got caught up in the Cold War, a tenacious few kept hunting for ex-Nazi officials who were responsible for the murder of millions of Jews and others. In a spy-like, action packed text, the author tells the story of how Eichman was discovered in Argentina, kept under surveillance and then captured through an elaborate plan by an international team led by the Israelis.

What struck me were some of the thematic threads that ran through the book -

Everyone involved (and there were dozens) had lost a relative in the Holocaust and was still suffering the loss (why wouldn’t they be?) – this served as motivation, but also as an energy that sometimes had to be suppressed in order to pull off the mission successfully;
Even when world powers like the U.S., Europe, and even Germany lost focus on pursuing these criminals, a tenacious few – a lawyer in Germany, leaders in Israel, every day people in Argentina including a teenage girl – continued this pursuit.
To pull off this mission, meticulous care had to be taken as well as innovation – disguise, caution, use of new technology, etc. As well, collective thinking and collaboration and trust played an important role in the mission.

Beautiful. Well written and thoroughly researched. Actually, I found this in a bookstore and had not heard of Neal Bascomb. I immediately turned to the author’s note to check out his research and was impressed enough to pay. While the notes and research were extensive, Bascomb writes the following note: “Now, despite my best efforts, my reconstruction of these events is no doubt imperfect” and then he goes on to explain. Great example for your middle school students to consider in thinking critically about the informational texts they are reading.

You're looking at a real hero.

When I was a kid watching "The Super Friends" I generally liked Aquaman and any reason for him to telepathically talk to sea life to save the day. As I got older and heard the Gilbert Godfrey "he talks to fish" and even the Robot Chicken spoofs I kind of shined him on for Iron Man and the Flash comics. After 35 years of reading comics I can say that what Geoff Johns has done for DC comics and especially Aquaman rivals anything Bendis has done for Marvel (I like them both BTW). Aquaman has become one of my favorite comics. As much as I love the Green Lantern series since the Blackest Night run and the current Uncanny Avengers from Marvel very few comics have been on par with Aquaman as far as story and artwork.

Splash pages: Exceptional

Cast of characters: Volume 2 has created some fantastic characters and background story making Arther Curry a unique and fantastic hero. Mera was well developed in the lantern war for newer readers and shines in this book as well as the "Others".

Aquaman's powers: We have always known Aquaman had telepathy with sea life, physically stronger than humans (largely addressed in the Justice League cartoons), and can swim fast but even Namor the Sub-Lamer had better descriptions of his abilities thanks to the FF comics (Avengers vs. X-men was not my favorite series but watching Ben Grimm smack down Namor was seriously satisfying). Now through Johns' storytelling we are getting a much better idea of just how powerful Aquaman is and why he deserves his spot in the Justice League. Reference the Justice League Crisis on Two Earths DVD and you'll get an animated idea of his physical strength. Play the "Injustice" video game and again he's in a better light as one of the better characters.

As an unapologetic collector of comic books for the last 3 decades I currently collect 6 Marvel titles and 7 DC titles and I can honestly say that for the first time in my life a DC title places #1 in my collection schedule and it is Aquaman.

A true triumph for DC, for Geoff Johns, and for the character Aquaman!

If you already read Aquaman Vol. 1: The Trench (The New 52) by Geoff Johns (May 21 2013), you know how good that book was. Or, if you read my review of that book, you know how great I thought it was. Either way, it was a great launch for this revised title, and this second volume happens to be just as good. In this volume, we learn a great deal more about THIS VERSION (aka the New 52 Aquaman) of Aquaman - particularly in regards to his past relationship with Black Manta and a group of crime-fighting heroes he used to hang with in his younger days. The name of this group was "The Others" and that's where the mysterious title of this book comes from. In this story we also learn quite a bit more about Aquaman's past relationship with Dr. Shin, and the nature of their falling out.

As every comic fan is well aware of, Aquaman's had a long history of being the butt of countless jokes. He's always been a sort of second-class hero. Likewise, his arch-enemy Black Manta has long been considered a pretty weak villain. NOT AFTER READING THIS! Johns really elevates both of these characters' standing - making both of them characters to be feared and not people you would want to be working against you. Not only do both look cool, but they act in very menacing and calculated ways that make them far cooler than they've ever been in the past. Aquaman is FINALLY a book that I wouldn't be embarrassed to have on my shelves!

Ivan Reis (of GL fame) is just knocking it out of the park on artwork, as well! The pencils, inks and colors on this book just look incredible, and easily stand up to the best of any artist from any company. Black Manta just looks supremely cool in every panel that he's on, and so does everyone else that Reis puts his pencil to. It's literally been years since I gave any book a perfect 10 on art, but I had to give it to this great-looking book!

There's little (if anything) to complain about with this book. It was a pleasure to read and one that is sure to continue to attract the attention of comic readers and swell the ranks of persons who refer to themselves as fans of Aquaman! A true triumph for DC, for Geoff Johns, and for this particular character!

Aquaman's Past Lives Run Deep

Aquaman has secrets no one in the DC Universe has ever known about - and Geoff Johns is sharing them in The Others, the second graphic novel from the New 52 run he's currently writing.

As I have stated in another review, I was blown away by Johns' new incarnation of Aquaman. Although a perennial favorite of mine, Aquaman (Arthur Curry) has been much maligned in the comics community, and especially in one of my favorite television shows, The Big Bang Theory.

You can't make jokes about this revitalized Aquaman. He's as tough as they come, not quite Superman level, but I'm beginning to think he could go toe to toe with Wonder Woman. But as always in a Geoff Johns story, it's the character's backstory that really takes center stage.

And boy, does Arthur Curry have one. Although some of the seeds for this revelation are laid in the first graphic novel, they really come to fruition in this one. I'd never seen Aquaman as quite the bad boy (well, maybe a little in the Peter David run), but his younger self was a lot different from the man he is today. Of course, Johns lays out the reasons for all the strum and drang in his story: Aquman's mother disappeared after giving birth to him, he was raised by his father who kept waiting for the love of his life to reappear, he manifested strange powers that set him even further apart from the general population, and Dr. Shin was there to exploit Arthur - up to the point of causing Arthur's dad's death.

That's a lot of estrangement to deal with. On top of that, as the displaced king of Atlantis, there are unknown factions out to get him, and the sunken continent has got a lot of hidden mythology we never knew about.

The Others are the first super team Aquaman worked with prior to the Justice League. Johns outdoes himself with their creation, making each member volatile and instantly memorable. Not only that, he ties them in to some of Atlantis's lost legacy and reveals where Arthur got his cool new trident.

Mera continues to be a big part of the series, and I loved the scenes between her and Ya'Wara (who would have ever figured Arthur would have been an item with a JUNGLE queen? Yet, Johns makes that make sense too). That tension could have been played out differently, rendering Mera as a worried female. Instead she is bold and trusts Arthur, and just makes sure she marks her territory to the ex-flame.

Black Manta has long been a staple in the Aquaman universe, but his character in this graphic novel is a lot more edgy and dangerous than he has ever been. Previously, I just hadn't seen him as much of a match for Aquaman, but in this story he's definitely a physical and intellectual threat.

In laying down the foundations of Atlantis, Johns is also setting up the future complications with the sunken city and his half-brother, Orm. I can't wait so see where Arthur's story takes us next.

As always, Ivan Reis's art is simply fantastic. He draws readers - literally - into fascinating and detailed worlds. I often go back through the pages just to absorb the images.

Good Introduction to Key Topics and Proofs of Number Theory

William J. LeVeque's short book (120 pages), Elementary Theory of Numbers, is quite satisfactory as a self-tutorial text. It should appeal to math majors new to number theory as well as others that enjoy studying mathematics.

Chapter 1 introduces proofs by induction (in various forms), proofs by contradiction, and the radix representation of integers that often proves more useful than the familiar decimal system for theoretical purposes.

Chapter 2 derives the Euclidian algorithm, the cornerstone of multiplicative number theory, as well as the unique factorization theorem and the theorem of the least common multiple. Speaking from experience, I recommend that you take the time necessary to master Chapter 2, not just because these basic proofs are important, but more critically to reinforce the skills and discipline necessary for the subsequent chapters.

Two integers a and b are congruent for the modulus m when their difference a-b is divisible by the integer m. In chapter 3 this seemingly simple concept, introduced by Gauss, leads to topics like residue classes and arithmetic (mod m), linear congruences, polynomial congruences, and quadratic congruences with prime modulus. The short chapter 4 was devoted to the powers of an integer, modulo m.

Continued fractions, the subject of chapter 5, was not unfamiliar and yet, as with congruences, I quickly found myself enmeshed in complexity, wrestling with basic identities, the continued fraction expansion of a rational number, the expansion of an irrational number, the expansion of quadratic identities, and approximation theorems.

I have yet to tackle the last two chapters, the Gaussian integers and Diophantine equations, but my expectation is that both topics will also require substantial effort and time. LeVeque's Elementary Theory of Numbers is not an elementary text, nor a basic introduction to number theory. Nonetheless, it is not out of reach of non-mathematics majors, but it will require a degree of dedication and persistence.

For a reader new to number theory, LeVeque may be too much too soon. I suggest first reading Excursions in Number Theory by C. Stanley Ogilvy and John T. Anderson, another Dover reprint. It is quite good.

Some caution: LeVeque emphasizes that many theorems are easy to understand, and yet this very simplicity is a two-edged sword. Simple theorems often provide no clues, no hints, on how to proceed. Discovering a short and elegant proof is often far from easy. LeVeque also stresses that a technique ceases to be a trick and becomes a method only when it has been encountered enough times to seem natural. A reader new to number theory may initially be overwhelmed by the variety of techniques used.

A nit: The Dover edition of LeVeque's Elementary Theory of Numbers would benefit from a larger font size. I occasionally found myself squinting to read tiny subscripts and superscripts.

Very good

Very good book. First to comment on the fact that LeVeque has 2 dover books that cover basically the same topics (this one, and Fundamentals of Number Theory). I have looked at both, and this one is the better of the two. The other one uses slightly different definitions that have an Abstract Algebra twist to it. But the other book still doesn't use the power of abstract algebra so the different/akward definitions and explanations just make it hard to read.

An elementary number theory book should use elementary definitions and concepts (abstract algebra is meant for ALGEBRAIC number theory books). So avoid his other book, which is good, but not as easy to read as this one.

This book is very easy to read and concepts are introdced very clearly. Things come in small chunks which are easily digested. The thing about this book is, you can go through it faster than normal textbooks but you still end up learning everything you would by going slowing through hard-to-read texts (not like The Higher Arithmetic by Davenport, that book can lull you into reading it like a story book, but you end up learning nothing).

Readable, clear, but needs an errata page

As others have said, this is a fairly easy read. For me it's actually fun and I'm working through it for that reason. But:

- I don't normally use a highlighter, but found it necessary to highlight symbols where they were defined, because some of them come up only once in a while and it's easy to forget where the definition is. Symbols are not indexed. I have started my own symbol index in the back of the book.

- There are some annoying errors. The theorem to be proven in section 1-3, problem 2 is false for n=1. The decimal expansions in the chapter on continued fractions (page 75) are wrong (for example 1.273820... should actually be 1.273239...). It seems to me if you're going to give 7 digits they should be the right 7 digits.

On the other hand, these errors don't affect the overall flow of the text, and I'm having a great time working through this book on my own. I've read through the whole thing over the summer, and I'm going back through doing problems and writing programs. I was a math major 40 years ago, and haven't done much with it since, to give a context for that remark.

Although this exhaustive study is accurate and up to date, it's formidable length (over 1000 pages!) will greatly limit its appeal. Comprehensive and Helpful!

Dr. Haas has put together one of the most complete nutrition books that can be enjoyed by the average reader. From what I have read, he makes no outrageous claims, though he does believe nutrition can offer health benefits (which would distinguish this book from a standard nutrition textbook). While the price may seem a little steep, there are 1140 pages that contain a wealth of information. The first 353 pages list virtually every popular nutrient (vitamins, minerals, fats, etc) and food category (such as beans, citrus fruits, etc). He even gives relevant information on the pseudo-vitamins such as Pangamic Acid (B15), amygdalin (B17), and Vitamin U. He also lists many of the popular diets and their benefits and drawbacks.
He also includes a very helpful section on "the Environmental Aspects of Nutrition." Possible pollutants and common food additives are discussed. He lists "88 Survival Suggestions."
Over 100 pages are dedicated to a Seasonal Cookbook. The foods are healthy, but possibly difficult for the average reader to obtain. It is possible with a little work however. There is a section on "Nutritional Application," which has special diets and suggestions for people with cancer, heart disease, yeast syndrome, and other disorders. He also includes suggestions for executives, adults, children, alcoholics, and adolescents. Overall the Nutritional Application section is very complete.
Finally he includes around 80 pages of health questionnaires that test health knowledge and actually intend to estimate one's health level. I use this whenever I have general or specific health questions. I recommend it highly.

Should be everyone's nutrition bible.

Dr Haas has written an exhausting, thorough and informative "bible" about everything from what carbs, proteins and fats are and how they work to every vitamin, mineral and supplement you can imagine to special diets for different stages of your life or special needs to recipes...it just covers everything. I especially have to rave about a Western doctor who recognizes the validity of things like food combining and Candidiasis.
This book is over 1,100 pages and it's just jam packed with more information than you will think you need, but then you'll be surprised to find how many sections you'll flip to for info that pertains to you and your family.
I have a huge library of nutrition books and references that are really useful and well-written, but I'd toss them all just to have this one. If you are hesitant about the price or the size of the book, don't be. You will find it to be incredibly useful, easy to understand and beneficial when applied to your own daily life. I know I did.
This is far and away THE best nutrition book out there, I can't see how anyone could top this, unless he releases it with more information one day (and I can't see how there could be more.)

The definitive comprehensive nutrition reference

For those looking for the omnibus, cover-all reference book on nutrition, this is it. It is a thoroughly comprehensive examination of nutrition from just about every possible facet. Dr. Haas incorporates most of the more modern and alternative thinking on nutrition, even going so far as to examine environmental and spiritual issues, while avoiding the extreme, faddish ideas either of the medical establishment or the alternative fringe. He really does seem to have taken the time to weigh the value of studies done in both the mainstream and alternative research communities and brought together the clear, probable truths from both camps. And by the same token, he provides warnings against the doubtful claims of both sides.
This is not a book, however, for those looking for a quick, capsule synopsis of a dietary approach. Those people might be better served with Patrick Holford's "Optimum Nutrition Bible" which provides much of the same information in a condensed form. Rather this book is ideal for those looking to make an informed decision based on their own choices.

The papers included here cover a wide range of issues: fundamental studies of the turbulence problem, practical applications of turbulence, superfluid turbulence, cryogenic facilities and capabilities to support the demands of cryogenic turbulence research, and new types of miniature flow instrumentation. All of these topics are crucial for high-Reynolds-number research. The papers give a state-of-the-art assessment of the use of helium flows - on the one hand, for turbulence research at very high Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers and, on the other, for testing navy and aerospace models under realistic parameter ranges. The editors have provided two survey papers, and a number of pioneering papers are included.

May be the WORST neuro book ever written!!!

This is the WORST science book I have ever brought. Here are just few of the MANY problems: 1) The text is full of grammatical and factual errors. (Note: I am talking about errors in neuroscience basics, not error due to new discoveries.) 2) The contents within each chapter are poorly organized and confusing. 3) Illustrations rarely, if ever, match the content within the text. For example, sometimes the text mentions a structure but that structure is nowhere on ANY illustrations within the chapter. 4) A shameful index. Very often there will be a neuro word I don't know and have not encountered in previous chapters. I go to the index and guess what? The index points me to the page I started with!!! 5) No glossary. He doesn't define the word in the text. He doesn't redirect with the index. You are basically going to have to grab another neuro book for the definition! 6) The title page claims 100+ color photos. Don't be fooled. That just means he added blue in the pictures. 7) Oh, did I mention there are multiple illustrations that are FLAT OUT WRONG!!! How can the editors of Springer Verlag let this be published!??!?!? Do yourself a favor. If you have this book, BURN it (or write the author for a refund)!!!! If you don't have this book, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

Good, good book

This is my kind of neuro book. It's integrated; it's multidimensional; its logical; and it makes neuroscience as 'mathematical' as biology can get. What does that mean? Well, it makes cramming unnecessary; to quote Poincare, there are two abilities in learning mathematics: one is sheer memory for steps in a chain of reasoning; the other, in his view by far more important, and which this book facilitates, is an appreciation of the nature of the links between propositions. If these links have been appreciated, the exact identity of the steps becomes less important because, if necessary, they can be reconstructed. This is the finest neuroscience book for its level I've come across; and if I go on to win the Nobel Prize, I know who to thank.

This is a poorly written book, with many errors. It is confusing, contradictory and badly organized. Avoid if at all possible.
