An important history of a secret enthusiasm

Margot Mifflin's book is an amazingly well-documented and thoroughly acurate telling of the secret history of tattooed women and women tattoo artists in America. I was interviewed extensively for this subject, and throughout the year she was gathering material I watched as Mifflin's knowledge and understanding of her subject matter grew.
Contrary to another UNSIGNED review posted here, I believe the women quoted are proud to have been included and I have not heard ONE of my peers complain about it.
Many people feel that tattooing has experienced a huge upsurgence of popularity in the last decade, but until this book most will not have had the perspective to realise just how common it was for your Grandma to have slipped off to get a wicked little something, possibly a secret only she and her husband shared. It is women's willingness to boldly display their tattoos, NOT their enthuisiasm for body art, that has changed.
Margot Mifflin brought her experience as an investigator with a feminist perspective to the organization of a vast wealth of material, helped by many of the important members of the tattoo community. We knew that this was unlikely to be a book one of us would write, and it most definately needed to be written.
From the circus ladies who chose to exhibit themselves as art to the educated graphic artists of today who choose tattooing as their art medium, the women of ink are grateful.

A DEFINITE MUST-HAVE!

As a heavily tattooed woman, I am constantly searching out the archives for great books regarding the subject. I've read some pathetically boooooring books in my day, but not only was this book exciting, but incredibly accurate as well. I particularly enjoyed the vintage photos of the earliest women to experience the needle...I am a first-hand example of familiarity with the stigma attached to beautiful women with beautiful tats, I can't even imagine the stigma held in the early 1900's...A great read for females AS WELL AS MALES just looking to brush up on some inkin' history or seeking out a career in the industry...

The Best Tattoo Book For Women

As a relatively newly tattooed woman, I have embraced the culture and am looking to learn more about it. This book showed me what it was like for women with tattoos through the ages. The book is extremely well written and researched and the photos are fabulous. If you are a woman who has tattoos or is thinking about getting one, I highly recommend this book. I work in an extremely conservative environment and was brought up to believe tattoos are evil and dirty, so I struggled with my decision to get my tattoos, but this book not only made me feel more comfortable with my decision, it helped me with new ideas for my backpiece :)

The first thing you notice about Case Study Houses: The Complete CSH Program, 1945-1966 is its size: it's big. Contained within its 16-inch frame is the history of Arts & Architecture magazine's famed program created to inspire the building of low-cost modern homes in America. The brainchild of magazine editor John Entenza, the program drew well-known architects including Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Richard Neutra. Throughout the book are spectacular photographs of modernist glass- and patio-filled homes. Most of the homes were built in the Los Angeles area and make wonderful use of the surrounding scenery. A 17-foot-tall front door opens up onto a canal; streamlined Herman Miller furniture fills out a living room that overlooks a breathtaking panorama. While not all the projects were built, each received a detailed spread in the magazine, including drawings and models. Some of the architectural drawings are lovely, drawn with the movement and fluidity of a master. Included are short biographies of each architect, a provocative epilogue by photographer Julius Shulman, and the reprinted original magazine pages that announce the birth of the Case Study idea. About the Author
Elizabeth A. T. Smith is the former Chief Curator and Deputy Director for programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Previously a curator at MOCA Los Angeles, where she organized "Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses," Smith has taught at the University of Southern California and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. She has curated numerous exhibitions and published widely on various aspects of contemporary art and architecture.

Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. For TASCHEN he published monographs on Julius Shulman, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture Series.

A resident of Los Angeles since 1920, Julius Shulman documented modernist architecture in Southern California and across the globe for nearly eight decades. His images of Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 (1960) in Los Angeles and Richard J. Neutra's Kaufmann House (1947) in Palm Springs are among the most recognizable and iconic architectural photographs of the 20th century. Shulman's interest in photography developed into a career when he photographed Neutra's Kun Residence in Los Angeles with his Kodak Vestpocket camera in 1936. Neutra admired young Shulman's images and continued to commission his work. Other leading architects of the time followed suit, as did hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and book publishers. Shulman's numerous awards include the Architectural Photography Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1969), a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York (1998), and honorary doctorates from various academic institutions. He died on July 15, 2009 at the age of 98.

My "SHOW OFF" Book

This book is the next best thing to standing inside any of the Case Study Houses. I must admit, I use this book not only for reference, but to show off to anyone who comes to my house. This book tells my visitors that I love modernism, and that the Case Study Houses of California are some of my favorite houses in the world. If you feel the same, then you should also buy this book. If you just want to learn a little about the Case Study Houses, then Case Study Houses: 1945-1966: The California Impetus (Taschen Basic Architecture) is a great concise book. I received that one as a gift. At first I thought I wouldn't need it because I already have the jumbo book, but if I need to find out a quick piece of information I can usually go to the smaller book and find it more quickly. In conclusion, this is one of the top three most important books on architecture that I own.

This book is a "case study" in value.

I have been familiar with the Case Study Houses for years and downloaded the articles linked to the Wikipedia website. This book is a encyclopedic look at this program and is well worth the money. The book is printed on heavy, large format pages and even had a plastic dust jacket.

A worthy book equal to its size

I ordered this book and then had to wait eight months for it to arrive from Amazon as it was back-ordered. It was well worth the wait as it's one of the definitive books on modern architecture. I saw this book while visiting a design center in Palm Springs several years ago and just had to have it. All of the "masters" are in the book and a number of the original floor plans and details are shown. Also, a significant number of photos were taken by legendary photographer Julius Shulman. If you want to display this book on your coffee table, make sure it's strong enough to support it, as this book is huge.
For anyone remotely interested in mid-century architecture or everyone who wishes to experience what life was like over fifty years ago, this book is for you. You won't be disappointed in this fabulous book. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea), a comfy chair, and prepare to spend the better part of an afternoon reading a few of the Case Study Houses showcased in this worthy book.

A Stunner, Folks

With all due respect to the previous reviewer, I really don't see the use in contrasting Perec and Clancy. They're not just in different ballparks, but they play different games. Clancy's job is to tell a good story and make things simple; he does it well, and I'm a fan. Perec's job, however, is to make sure his reader knows exactly how difficult things really are. This goes doubly for an approach to one of the most difficult historical moments of the recent past, the Holocaust. Perec's "W or the Memory of Childhood" embodies all of the violence of this historical tragedy and of memories of such tragedy.
There are two narrative threads running through this book, touching each other occasionally in a manner that illuminates both in strange and arresting ways. Half of the chapters are "W," the fictional account of a man, Gaspard Winckler, who has survived a war by adopting the identity of a parapalegic (the real Gaspard Winckler) who later dies in a shipwreck off the Tierra del Fuego. Prodded by the mysterious Otto Apfelstahl, the living Gaspard embarks on a journey to recover his memory of the real Gaspard, to discover who he was and how he died. This journey becomes, in the second half of "W," a description in coldly anthropological terms of a seemingly totalitarian island-state, in which citizens are forced to compete in brutal and naked athletic games for things like food and the right to procreate--the basics of human life.
The other half of the chapters are Perec's own autobiographical contributions, beginning, despite the promising title of the book, with the admission, "I have no memory of childhood." Perec's voice sifts through his rubbled past--his father's death in the French Army, his mother's transportation to Auschwitz, his being concealed in a Catholic school and raised by his relatives--and attempts to separate what he remembers from what he has been taught to remember through photos, language, etc. His reflections are marked with a humor that is endearing in light of his horrifying experiences, and with a subtlety that is astounding in light of the atrocities to which the text must bear remote witness.
The two narratives, "W" and "The Memory of Childhood," weave around each other like ivy, finally becoming, in a stunning and climactic final chapter, part and parcel of one story. Perec's ultimate fusion of his willful fictions and his awe-full remembrances is powerful and well-presaged; the entire universe of the book builds beautifully and disturbingly toward this final moment, as the fictions become more like fact and the autobiography occupies itself increasingly with fictions.
Bellos' translation is superb, even if one does lose some of the very productive puns of the original (the moment early on, for example, when "l'Histoire avec sa grande hache" should make us think simultaneously of History with a capital H and History with its big axe; Bellos sticks with the capital H rendering of the phrase).
So, no, "W or the Memory of Childhood" is not Tom Clancy. But it doesn't mean to be, and it doesn't need to be. What it is, instead, is a sobering, touching, daunting and disturbing reminder of some of the worst our century has had to offer. If you are interested in a writer who is unashamed of standing heroically baffled and gaping in the face of immeasurable atrocity, buy and read this book.

Georges Perec's W, or The Memory of Childhood is an astonishing narrative that fuses two stories about the exploration of one man's disoriented childhood during WWII and another's disturbing tale of W, a place where nightmares become reality. The reader is led to believe that these two tales have little in common, but as they unfold it becomes painfully clear just how connected they are.

The first tale is an autobiography of a man struggling to understand his shattered childhood, the loss of his parents, and the painful experiences of growing up in Nazi occupied France. Perec utilizes a style of fragmented writing, much like the actual memory of our own childhoods. This style allows the reader to see how memory is truly bits and pieces of shrouded experience that must be sorted and analyzed. In spite of the title, Perec admits that "I have no childhood memories" in the opening of the autobiography and this is displayed throughout the tale. Every memory, every photograph is poked with holes, which is made evident by the recurrent phrases beginning with "perhaps" and "I think" and "maybe". Memory of childhood cannot be painted in a clear picture; it will always be distorted and vague and Perec's style incorporates this idea.

The second tale is a story that seems to have no relation to the autobiography. It is a story about a man with little past who has deserted the French army and lives in Europe by assuming the identities of other people. Under the assumed identity of Gaspard Winckler, the protagonist reaches the merciless island of W, a direct metaphor of Nazi Germany. The island-state forces people to compete in Olympic like events in order to win the basics of human life. Winners are glorified with rich clothes and lavish meals, and of course encouraged to over-indulge to ensure they would not win the following day. Losers are stripped naked and beaten, but are occasionally stoned to death and hung on the city gates to make it clear that `survival of the fittest' is the law of the land.

The entire island of W is related to the ideas that fueled ethnic cleansing during WWII. The degradation and punishment of the weak and the glorification of the strong on W is much like Hitler's final plan and his attempt at establishing an Arian race. Although the stories remain separate until the end of the book, these metaphorical ties are evident and can be seen by the attentive reader. The tales seem to want to converge, and then they both take off in separate directions again. The merging of the stories builds throughout the narrative as Perec uses light touching of ideas and metaphors to link W, and Perec's autobiography in 1940's France.

The real fusion of the two tales comes in the final chapters of the story when the autobiography begins to turn more like fiction, and the fictional story of W, starts to become more factual. We learn that the island of W is a real island and that it is being used as a deportation station in South America. We learn of what truly went on in camps and how hard people were worked and how badly they were treated. These stories are beautifully woven together by Perec and they show true compassion and inventive writing style. This is a touching narrative of some our century's worst times, and a wonderful piece of writing by Georges Perec.

This one's never gonna pull readers away from Clancy

A unfortunate sacrifice of story in favor of experimental form, this hybrid of autobiography and politically-charged fairy tale never actually coheres and never really gets across the real atrocities both the author and Europe underwent. That the novel is patently a literary game somehow doesn't seem related to the fictional culture of games being indicted in the novel, and since the relation between the form and the content is unclear the book falls flat. Or maybe the novel is about the simultaneous futility and necessity of testimony. Unfortunately any subtler rationale for the book is lost in tumult.

Another Amazing adventures w/ Jade & Co

It's refreshing to read this installment of Annie Bellet's Twenty Sided Sorceress series and see that it maintains all the great pacing, wit, and engaging story telling as her previous novels. Bellet has been a gem of a find and I immediately dowloaded her entire catalog after finding her because she excels in creating greats characters with depth & complexity. Most heroines seem to cut from the Buffy cookie cutter these days but Jade exhibits such a diverse reactions in this series, first displaying an aloofness til the depth of her emotions confront her almost as much as Samir and she embraces them to fuel & fight on. Instead of the usual crime fighting Scoobies, her friends show a devotion to family that's permeates "geek culture" more than gaming does. While I wish the books were longer, that's one of Bellet's gifts, crafting compelling stories without the fat of many overly long, drawn out works. As to the infuriating "cliffhanger", it provides a completely unexpected twist and is a kinda spoiler guys! I like that this series isn't over yet, there's so much that could be explored in these short novels ( is Wolf gone, what abt the vampire or huh, a dragon) I eagerly welcome a few more quests with Jade & crew.

These books are good but pretty short

Blasted through the whole series to this one, and was hoping book 6 would be out by that point. These books are good but pretty short. So kind of tough on the wallet for that reason. I enjoyed them but I would like some more meat (story) next time for the price.
