Pushing forward our understanding of the Experience Economy

As co-author of The Experience Economy, Updated Edition and co-founder of the European Centre for the Experience Economy with Albert Boswijk, I'm rather biased. But believe me when I say that Economy of Experiences is a great book that extends our ideas -- even disagreeing with us on occasion! It pushes forward what we know about today's Experience Economy, focusing on those experiences that are meaningful and co-created. (In fact, it wasn't until I read the first edition of this book that I truly understood what "co-creation" was all about.) Anyone looking to create greater value for their customers should absorb its lessons, for it has many such lessons that anyone seeking to embrace the Experience Economy should take to heart.

The economy of experiences is upon us...

... and if you were at all in doubt, then you must read this book. Boswijk, Peelen and Olthof provide an excellent overview of the history of the Experience Economy, and give a lot of insight into what the future might hold. They build on an academic and scientific foundation and bring it together with some wonderful cases. I thought I was very familiar with the concepts of the Experience Economy, but this book took me by surprise a few times, so I would recommend it both for veterans and people just discovering what it is all about.

Great book. Expect no direct "actions to take" plan at end

Great book. Good history and science lesson. Recommended read for everyone. Didn't give it 5 stars bc I felt the last chapter didn't have a direct action plan to take for the individual or people currently living in the less sustainable regions. You basically take away "move". Also felt there was no timeline or opinion of author of "when" each state of breakdown will happen

Very important book, and should be widely reviewed and discussed

This is a very important book, which deserves attention and careful study by everybody who cares about the futures of cities in the 21st century. The key problem addressed in the book is the dependence of mega-cities in North America on fossil fuels, and the unsustainability of these cities without or beyond fossil fuels. (Oil and gas from 'fracking' shale can provide only temporary postponements of what is coming). It seems that no combination of renewables, energy efficiency, and energy conservation can support the continuation of the lifestyles and economies in these cities post-fossil-fuels, as the authors make clear using and citing much published research and analysis. Impacts of climate change on some of these cities and regions are also included in the discussion. Some smaller cities are much more sustainable over the longer term, for reasons which are well-described in the book. Jared Diamond has observed that civilizations sometimes collapse because of slow changes which do not alarm anybody at the time, and the long-term implications of which are not well-understood. With books like this, and all of the research which is noted and reviewed in the book, we do not have that excuse. Many writers, scholars, and activists are trying to mainstream this kind of knowledge, and working on developing new paradigms for local economic and social life in their regions. This book should be a big resource in these efforts.

Grade 3-6-It's been 10 years since the queen defeated Rumpelstiltskin by speaking his name, but now he's back to demand repayment for all of the gold he spun for her so many years ago. If she does not oblige, he threatens to increase the pest population and make the kingdom's livestock and other assets disappear by multiplying with fractions. Rumpelstiltskin multiplies the king's nose by six and vows to do the same for the entire royal court, unless Peter, the queen's 10-year-old son, agrees to go with him to work off the debt. It's up to the young prince to take possession of the man's magical multiplying stick and learn how to use it in order to restore normalcy to the kingdom. Calvert has created an interesting vehicle for teaching children about the differences between multiplying with whole numbers and multiplying with fractions. While obviously an educational product, her presentation is creative. Unfortunately, the audience for this book is fairly specific, and, as such, is limited. Children who have not been exposed to these concepts will likely be confused by the math component of the story. In some areas, multiplication of fractions is not taught until the last years of elementary school, but the book's format is unlikely to appeal to them. It's unfortunate, because Calvert has written an enjoyable teaching tool, and Geehan's luminous and expressive paintings are perfect for this fairy-tale world.-Carol L. When character was multiplying by fractions, I worried the students would be confused, since we haven't studied that concept yet. Instead, they caught on to how it works and were guessing what he'd multiplied by before I could read it!

Great Math lessons

This is a really cute retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. I loved that the evil little guy comes around ten years later to demand more. Such a meanie. The math lesson is wonderful - I recommend this book for grade-school age children to enjoy.
