Left wanting more!

Because it had been a while since the last book had been released, I totally reread the first two books to refresh my memory on the storyline. It was as interesting the second time around as the first. Book 3 left me wanting even more. As the storyline and the characters continue to evolve I can not think of a single bad thing to say except for, please do not make me wait for a year for the next installment to this series! The Age of Alandria series is completely addictive and Morgan Wylie has a way of spinning her tale so that the reader can visualize what is happening in the book.

Deagan and Kaelieghanna are of course the main love interest and are destined to be together by the Fates dealt to them but it is so much more. Their chemistry is palpable.

As other characters and love interest evolve it will be interesting to see who picks who, can love conquer all, can the light win over darkness,and can Alandria be saved? I can't wait for the next installment to this series!

Wow. So much happened in this book. Kaleigh and her friends make it to Elnye. She senses right away that things are not as they seem, and that causes trouble for Kaleigh and her friends. She finds out that her warriors loyalties run much deeper than she thought. After calling Melina out on her deception Kaleigh and her friends are locked up as prisoners. While being locked up they meet a new character and they aren't sure if he can be trusted. After a daring rescue the group is led to safety. Once they reach their safe haven, both Kaleigh and her warrior meet some interesting characters and they learn more about who they are. With Kaleigh being the legend of prophecy, residents of Alandria are ready to take a stand against the darkness. The emotions that the characters experience while they go through this and so much more is well conveyed and heartfelt. The book is so clearly depicted you can visualize scenes from the book as if you are standing there. The book is a cliffhanger and leaves you craving more. I have will be anxiously awaiting for the release of the next book.

I liked the book but will not probably buy another

I kept thinking the book would come to an end only to find each book is quit short and so had to find the next one. Upon finishing book 3, I was discouraged to find another that has not been published yet and feel that there will probably be more to come on top of the 4 I have already finished. When I get into a good book, I want to finish it in a reasonable time frame and very definitely do not want to wait months or a year to finish. This turns me off to an author. As much as I have enjoyed the story, I will probably, as I know from experience, end up.loosing interest. To me that is sad and I probably will not order more books from this author!

Fae to the rescue 5 stars

H.D. Gordon is a new author to me and I was captivated by her storytelling. The Halfling is fast paced, mystery/suspense urban fantasy that takes you on a wild ride. It has magic, cool gadgets, super swoony men, a kickass heroine, smart and engaging sidekicks and best of all it also has a superhero.

Aria Fae is a seventeen year old, half human and half Fae, who has been banished to the human world. All she knew to be true is no more. Her mother is gone and so is her home. The Peace Brokers she has spent her young life serving for has exiled her, never to return home again. Never thinking how she will survive on her own.

As Aria struggles to accept her fate, she finds herself suddenly thrust into an alien world called, Grant City. She wants to desperately blend in, become the shadow, and hide from everyone so no one notices that she is different.

On her first day at school, she rescues Samantha Shy from getting beat up and forges a bond of true friendship in the midst of confusion and loneliness of this new destiny. Samantha takes Aria under her wings and shows her the ropes. Sam is a geeky, computer whiz. But deep down Sam hides an intense pain that was brought on by the loss of a loved one.

As the story develops, I loved how the author addresses Aria’s battle with depression, how she defined the disease. She portrayed Aria as a strong willed, young woman yet she did not shy away from showing Aria’s vulnerable side. As Aria struggles with what the future holds for her, she succeeds in acclimatizing herself to her new situation with the help of Sam and finally reveals the truth about her origin to her. Sam being Sam totally embraces Aria being half human and half Fae.

H.D. Gordon very subtly incorporate a touch of romance into the story with the entrance of mysterious Reid and charming young Caleb. All through the book I kept rooting for Reid, he played an integral yet elusive role as Aria’s neighbor. Aria manages to intrigue Reid but he keeps his thoughts very close to his chest and never reveal that he knows or that he sees everything. And for Aria there is something about Reid that strikes her imagination and seizes her teen hormones. Whereas, Caleb played a huge role in the story what with his father being who he is. Caleb on the other hand is pretty straight forward about his interest in Aria and he pursues her relentlessly. As Aria slowly starts to make a new life for herself in Grant City, she also makes a new friend in her employer, Rose.

Then Sam, because of her tragic past and because of the Fae skills that Aria possesses, comes up with a plan. She wants Aria to fight crime during her nights and keep the streets of Grant City safe. Sam manages to get her childhood best friend, Mark to tag long on their quest. At first things are easy, dangerous but exhilarating, the trio make a perfect team, each bringing a skillset into the mix. They manage to make quite a dent in the Black Magic market. But little do they know that the main man, Mr. Shy wasn’t a dummy. My heart about jumped out of my chest with what transpires. The true revelation of who Mr. Shy is and what he is all about almost made me throw my kindle. What Aria had to face, how she had to center herself. And the ending and the hurting. OH MY LORD.

The ending left me craving for more and some part of why Aria was banished comes to light. It made me angry and sad and I wanted to hug her and make her feel safe and accepted. If you haven’t read the The Halfling then don’t wait any more, go and 1-click this fastastical story about Fae and their kinds.

I love when a book exceeds my expectations!

The Halfling by H D Gordon is the first book in The Aria Fae Series, a paranormal fantasy that exceeded my expectations with fantastic writing and characters that grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go.

Aria knew she couldn’t run from her past, but here she is, in a new place. She is a skate board riding Fae, part of the Brokers, an organization of Halflings, half supernatural and half human. She is an empath and I cannot imagine how difficult that would be in high school. Her empathy and need to help gets her in trouble, but I love her for it. How can I resist a strong character who marches to her own drum?

She meets up with Sam, a girl hacker who becomes her BFF and it changes everything. I love the little nerd, Sam, who is your typical teenager…except for her supernatural skills. I love the connection that brought them together, but you will need to find out for yourself. The girls fun personalities and watching them grow and blossom as they create their family kept me on pins and needles as I kept waiting for the bad to happen. I know it has to come, but I love these kids so much I don’t want anything to happen to them.

Thomas Reid is a hottie and I think he is holding a secret that will add more to the suspense.

H D Gordon can take a familiar theme and twist it so creatively that it becomes fresh and original. Her descriptive writing makes the story seem real and I am unable to resist being drawn in deeper with each page I read. The Halfling has so much that I love, the paranormal, fantasy, determined women (albeit young ones) and so much more. As the story grows, so too does the suspense and mystery. I never saw where this was going and I love when a book exceeds my expectations. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

Thank Heaven for Strong Women

Ok my favorite reads are the ones that have tough heroines. The ones that throw a few punches, fight their own battles. This book rocked so hard! I loved the two male potential's romances. The romance influences was well written. I bet Aria would be great with either of them. And let me the tell you the Best Friend Sam cracked me up. This book dealt with bullies and depression. It had kick but action scenes. So much to love about this book. If I got to pick a character to be out of the many books I've read I'd choose Aria. This book kept me up way into the next morning. Worth my book hangover. This is worth buying right now. ❤️

Non-Fiction, All-encompassing work on the real Dracula

If you were ever curious as to how and where the vampire stories began and how Bram Stoker conceived the idea for his book this is a must have. It depicts the events in the life of Vlad Teppes (Dracula), the son of Dracul and notorious leader of Transylvania and the bloodthirsty Eizabeth Bathory of a Hungarian aristrocratic family.

Bit of a let down....

I was disappointed with this book. I have read the authors' biography of Dracula, and found little new or worthwhile presented here. Moreover, the title is deceptive. Very little of this book is devoted to the history of vampires, and too much of it deals with modern popular culture. Given that the authors are serious scholars, I was hoping for a detailed look at popular culture roughly at the time of Vlad Tepes. I highly recommend the authors' other book, "Dracula: Prince of Many Faces," but find little merit in this volume. I think this book might have more appeal to a general audience. So, if you are looking for some basic background on the "real" Dracula (Vlad Tepes), and the basics of how he fits into folklore and popular culture, then this book may very well be for you. It is well written, and draws on the authors' considerable knowledge. It just was not what I expected or hoped for.

Lots and Lotsa Dracula Going On

This is one entertaining volume, one I can refer back to time and time again. The writers give a very matter-of-fact account of the life and times of Vlad Tepes, occasionally laced with a bit of wry humor, and relate the legends that have grown around ye olde impaler. From there, they take us through Bram Stoker and his background, and on to the celluloid versions of Dracula, all without pausing for breath...and happily so. My favorite bits are the various legends about Prince Vlad told from several points of view, and how they compare with each other. Very revealing, and always entertaining. Great fun for vampire afficionados and "serious" devotees alike.

Amazon Description Error in our Favor!

A great piece of work! The amazon description is wrong though as this volume collects issues 0, 85, and 90-100 plus the 2 part Legends of the DC Universe #4-5. Amazon is using the description from Wonder Woman The Contest which only collects the 1st half of Deodato's run. This volume contains the entire run and is way more read for your dollars!

Great story and amazing art work

Wonder Woman by Mike Deodato includes Wonder Woman #85, 0, 90-100 and Legends of The DC Universe 4 &5. Amazon and Previews description is incomplete. This story arc includes The Contest and Challenge Of Artemis. Great story and amazing art work. Very 90’s. What I don’t undersatand is why place chapter 85 after chapter 100 if this one is part of the sequence of the story. The two Legends chapters are not interesting, but the art is beautiful. Love it and recommend it 100%!
Amazon send the book in an envelope instead if the usual box. The mailman bends part of the envelope to put it in a mailbox made only for letter size envelopes! Anyway, there was no damage to the book

If your a fan of wonder woman this is something u will want for your collection..this is a fantastic story that introduces us to Artemis and shows us the 2nd contest were diana is striped of the wonder woman title...Also we learn at this time the fact that on Paradise Island Diana does not have her active powers and we see how artemis reacts to having the sandals of hermes and the Gauntlet of Atlas..Now what I really love is the Costume redesign with the jacket and the look...I for one loved it and I loved the fact that even though she is not wonder woman she still has the symbol because of a pledge she made to her name sake...Fantastic

A good book for beginners

I bought this book because I needed to use GRASS and R to produce maps with the results of statistical analysis. Though I am an experienced programmer, I had never used R neither any GIS. The tutorials available on the Internet were enough to learn R, but GRASS was a brick wall.
After reading and trying the examples until page 200, I found myself able to work with raster and vectorial maps. Since I was completely illiterate on GIS, I learned in the book how the raster and vector data are organized, how to alter and combine maps and how to manage the vector databases. The sections about R and GRASS integration was very useful. Although it was of no particular interest to me, there are several sections about spatial analysis tools, 2D and 3D output, image processing and GRASS programing.
The book is not an exhaustive descriptions of the commands, which should be found on the GRASS documentation. It is more like a hands-on tutorial that makes you familiar with the system and the commands, even if you are novice. It will also be useful for people familiar with the graphic interface of other systems who need to start working with the command line.

OK Book, poor quality binding

The book covers many subjects broadly, from Remote Sensing, LIDAR as well as scanning historial maps. However, I found myself using the online users manual for the basics and step by step detail on HOW to use GRASS.

In addition, the binding of the book broke within 6 months, and about 25 pages fell out of the spine, with average use.

A very good introduction to the many capabilities of GRASS GIS

I waited several months for this 3rd edition of Neteler and Mitasova's 'Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach'. I'm not disappointed.

Pros:
1. The book is a major re-write of the earlier edition, and uses GRASS version 6.x - which has many improvements from earlier GRASS versions
2. It has tons of example applications, drawn and derived from an up-to-date sample dataset for North Carolina. Examples span the fields of hydrology, remote sensing,and a large number of standard GIS operations on vector and raster datasets.
3. It is well organized and succinct in its language.

Cons:
1. There are several typos.
2. Some of the examples may not exactly work on your own system - the authors acknowledge this, as each version of GRASS has some variations in dependent packages and libraries.
3. Some of the pages are not cross-referenced right.

To summarize:
I first used GRASS (version 4.3) in the year 2000. While I recognized back then how powerful GRASS is, I found it quite difficult to learn and to appreciate. In 2005-07, I revisited GRASS (version 6.0) for my dissertation research, and found that it had improved vastly. This book is an excellent way for readers to get a taste of how powerful GRASS 6.x is. It will be most useful for students and researchers who learn by doing - you will not learn GRASS (or any other GIS software) by just reading. Also, this book alone will not answer all your questions about GRASS - use the friendly and resourceful GRASS mailing lists for specific help with your own GRASS GIS projects.

Get into this book and GRASS GIS, only if you are willing to use the command line! If you are a programmer and are used to learning new languages/software, you probably do not need this book - the material on the GRASS website would be enough for you. If like me, you dont consider yourself a programmer but 'can do' when needed, this book will be very useful.

I hope that a more affordable paperback version of the third edition comes out!

About the Author
Dr. Prabir Basu, founding President of Greenfield Research Incorporated, a private research and development company in Canada that specializes in gasification and torrefaction, is an active researcher and designer of biomass energy conversion systems. Dr. Basu holds a position of Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department and is Head of Circulating Fluidized Bed Laboratory at Dalhousie University, Halifax His current research interests include frontier areas, chemical looping gasification, torrefaction, biomass cofiring amongst others.

Professor Basu also founded of the prestigious triennial International Conference series on Circulating Fluidized Beds, and a private R&D company, Fluidized Bed Systems Limited that specializes on design, training and investigative services on fluidized bed boilers.

Professor Basu has been working in the field of energy conversion and the environment for more than 30 years. Prior to joining the engineering faculty at Dalhousie University (formerly known as the Technical University of Nova Scotia), he worked with both a government research laboratory and a boiler manufacturing company.

Dr. Basu’s passion for the transformation of research results into industrial practice is well known, as is his ongoing commitment to spreading advanced knowledge around the world. He has authored more than 200 research papers and seven monographs in emerging areas of energy and environment, some of which have been translated into Chinese and Korean. He is well known internationally for providing expert advices on circulating fluidized bed boilers and conducting training courses to industries and universities across the globe.

Very good introduction to Biomass Processing technologies

Very good book as a primer to such technologies and fundamentals of biomass characterization and handling.

You may get disappointed if you are looking for detailed technical-economical information for feasibility studies, but clearly it is not the advertised proposal of the book anyway.

Easy reading, comprehensive to anyone with good 'high school level' technical/scientific background.

Thorough Overview

This book provides the radio amateur with everything that he/she needs to know to get started in JT65 and JT9. It is written at a level that most hams will understand, leaving the technical nuts and bolts for exploration later. Because everyone's situation is different, it doesn't cover 100% of what you will need to get on the air, but most hams can fill in the blanks with ease. There are plenty of screenshots to help you get started. There is also a good discussion of what to expect once you are on the air.
