Katherine Williams is Lecturer in Law at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Prior to this she taught at the University of Liverpool for nine years. Her main teaching areas are criminology, criminal justice, human rights and welfare law, and social policy. As well as her work on criminology she has recently published in the areas of criminal justice, computer law, and child sexual abuse.

OK but glaring inexcusable errors concerning Methylation's role in Histamine Intolerance.

This is an Ok book and has a lot of good useful information all in one place. As someone with histamine intolerance with gene defects that code for DAO, MAO, and HNMT finding out that turmeric blocked MAO was very useful as well as finding out exactly how Vitamin C works as an antihistamine. Her charts, while somewhat confusing are also useful. With such information in mind, as an herbalist and nutritionist, I was able to search for other herbs and supplements that also block either DAO or MAO and or other critical enzymes.

However this book also has some very glaring misinformation and leaves out some extremely important information. The most glaring error of all, and there should be no excuse anymore for anyone writing on histamine intolerance to make such an error, is that the author falsely claims that Methylation is "quackery" when it comes to histamine intolerance just because she read such on Wikipedia, and also after correctly noting that ""The HNMT [Histamine N-methytransferase] enzyme catalyzes the reaction of histamine with a methyldonor to N-methylhistamine."

If Ms. de Wild-Scholten had actually researched the full methylation and histamine pathways she would have realized that Wikipedia was totally wrong about methylation's role in histamine degradation. The HNMT enzyme is a methyltransferase enzyme which means it takes SAMe as a cofactor to work and SAMe is generated by the MAT enzyme converting the amino acid Methionine into SAMe using the cofactor Magnesium and ATP. If someone is going to write a book on histamine intolerance and then go so far as to slander Carl Pfeiffer and his ground breaking work as "Histadalia/Methylation Quackery", they had better do their homework first. If Mr. Pfeiffer was alive he could have sued Ms. de Wild-Schollen for her slander.

If someone has methylation issues such as an MTHFR defect, an MAT defect, a CBS upregulation defect etc. SAMe cannot be generated or recycled properly, or is turned into homocysteine too quickly (by the CBS upregulated enzyme) and histadalia can indeed be the result. I am homozygeous (two bad copies, one from each parent) on the gene that codes for the MAT enzyme, and have many other defects in the methyl cycle as well (including the genes that code for both critical MTHFR enzymes). In addition I am homozygeous for defective genes that code for both the critical DAO enzymes and the MAO A enzyme, and heterozygous for all my HNMT enzymes except one. The minute I took 500 mg of methionine I woke up for the first time in my life with out the blinding histamine headache I had endured every morning of my life and for half of the day every day.

Granted we know much more about how the methyl cycle works now, but such a glaring error by Ms. de Wild-Scholten in this day and age is nothing short of inexcusable.

Very detailed and well-explained

I found this book to be very useful. As a high-frequency migraine sufferer, I have suspected histamine intolerance to be a primary trigger for some time. The author explains the difference between DAO and HNMT enzymes and gives valuable case-history info. A must-read for anyone with frequent migraines.

A very useful book

I bought this book a few months ago. It turns out to be very useful. The author has spent much effort in bringing together what is known from large amount of sources, and to integrate it in a general perspective. At many points the different causal pathways are described in a level of detail that is hard to find in other sources. For those interested in the complex mechanisms behind histamine intolerance who are not able or do not want to do all this work by themselves, this book is a very helpful source.

About the Author
M. Davies is Associate Professor of Classical Languages and Literature, and Fellow of St John's College, Oxford. He has published a study of the Theban epics, editions of the fragments of Greek epic and lyric poetry, a commentary on Sophocles' Trachiniae, and (with J. Kathirithamby) a book on Greek insects, as well as many articles on Greek poetry, especially its interactions with folk-tale and other mythological traditions.

P. J. Finglass is Professor of Greek and Head of the Department of Classics, University of Nottingham, and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. He has published editions of Sophocles' Electra and Ajax, and Pindar's Pythian Eleven with Cambridge, as well as many articles on archaic and classical Greek literature. In 2012 he was awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize by the Leverhulme Trust. His research for this book was funded by an Early Career Fellowship awarded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Academics only! Not for general readers

This is strictly a scholar's book, not for general consumption. The advertisement made it seem as though the book included translations. There are translations, but one line or one fragment at a time buried amidst voluminous commentary and practically impossible to ferret out. The translations are competent, but hardly poetic. I was terribly disappointed with this book. It goes really little further with the existing Stesichorus oeuvre than the Loeb Classics series from years before as far as I can see. Maybe classics scholars will see it differently.

The quality of the book production is excellent, of course, which explains the high price. Scholars of ancient Greek poetry, especially Stesichorus experts, will no doubt find this a fascinating read. The historical commentary for each fragment is rigorous and excellent as far as this lay reader can tell. This is really for the expert, the graduate student, post-doc or professor of classics literature.

Because it is so well produced, I gave it three stars, though personally I would have given it only one star for false advertising and my overall disappointment.

This seventh edition of Principles of Electric Circuits: Conventional Current Version provides a complete and straightforward coverage of the basics of electrical components and circuits, with emphasis on analysis, applications, and troubleshooting. Many improvements have been made over the previous edition, but the coverage and organization remain the same. A new text design and layout enhance the text's appearance and usability.

New Features and Improvements

Troubleshooter Quiz. A multiple-choice quiz in the chapter end matter tests the student's grasp of what happens in a circuit as a result of certain changes or faults. The student must determine whether a specified quantity or parameter increases, decreases, or remains the same as a result of the introduction of a fault or a change in another circuit parameter. Answers are at the end of the chapter.

Engineering Notation. Chapter 1 includes an expanded coverage of engineering notation and the use of the calculator in scientific and engineering notation.

Electrical Safety. The topic of electrical safety is introduced in Chapter 2. It is supplemented by a feature called "Safety Note" located at appropriate points throughout the text and identified by a special logo.

Troubleshooting. An improved coverage of troubleshooting begins in Section 3-6 with an introduction. A systematic method called APM (analysis, planning, and measurement) is introduced and used in many of the troubleshooting sections and examples. Troubleshooting features are identified by a new logo.

Circuit Simulations. In addition to the EWB circuit simulations for Troubleshooting and Analysis problems that are available on the CD-ROM accompanying the textbook, Multisim circuits have been added. To avoid any backward compatibility issues, the EWB files have been retained for those who have not yet upgraded to Multisim.

Circuit Simulation Tutorials. The EWB and PSpice tutorials continue to be available on the website. In addition, Multisim tutorials are now available online. All of the tutorials can be downloaded for student use from www.prenhall.com/floyd.

Key Terms Terms. identified as most important in each chapter are listed in the chapter opener. Within the chapter, the key terms are in color boldface and indicated with a "key" icon. Each key term is defined at the end of the chapter and in the comprehensive glossary at the end of the book.

This is quite a good book. I used this for both my DC and AC circuits classes at the University of Hartford. I rented the book but should have bought it. It has very nice diagrams and is written out very well.

The author's approach to the concepts is very well-paced. The explanations are thought out and concise. Because of this, I've been able to speed through the book whilst mastering the content with ease. A well-grounded knowledge of algebra is of course requisite to being successful with this subject.
