Great for all skill levels!

You're getting a lot of bang for your buck with this book. It has a huge variety of songs. Though it is missing a few. For example:"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" which is one of my favorites. Still I've never found a more inclusive book of Christmas music for saxophone.

The songs range when it comes to skill level. Some of the songs are harder than others. My cousin (who is 12) came to visit on Christmas and asked if she could try my saxophone. She has never played saxophone, but could play "Silent Night" after a few hours. (Granted she had played other instruments).

I would recommend this book to all ages and skill levels! Nowhere else will you find the same collection of songs at such a reasonable price!

This is the best book to have if you don't know how to transpose keys to an instrument. It had so many familiar Christmas songs that I truly enjoy. A must have for all alto sax players.

Do you have a young writer in your house?

This is a superb book if you have an aspiring writer or just a child who likes to use words. It is laid out in a cute, fun and easy to read style. The pictures are delightful! Even if your child is a bit resistant to reading this book, the pictures will engage him or her.
You and your child will find such helpful information. He'll learn how to pick a subject and how to proofread a final draft. This book isn't just for the aspiriting author but is also wonderful to use in elementary school to get those papers done!
Your child will learn how to start a journal (a terrific way of expressing oneself), write a poem, (riddle or play) or write a fantasy story. He will also learn how to get ready to take a test with some test taking skills.
There is a section on how to use capital letters and punctuation and finally full color maps, an historical time-line and the metric system.
Other helpful sections in the book include helping your child manage his time, writing a speech. The one negative is that there is a section on using the card catelogue in the library. This book was written in 1995 and although many schools still use them, children are learning to look up books through the computer.
I definitely recommend this book to have in your home to help your child with his writing skills or to inspire the budding author. If you are a teacher this is a great book to have in the classroom.

A Personal Favorite from Way Back When

I was searching for this title to include in a personal essay (fittingly enough), and after I found it, I felt compelled to write a review. My parents got me this book after I showed an interest in writing during late grade school. I loved it. I devoured the sections on fiction and play writing and would leaf through the appendix just for fun. I returned to this book over and over again through middle school. One creative writing degree later, I think it's safe to say this book works! If you have a kiddo who's interested in writing (or who's simply inquisitive in general), I highly recommend you purchase this book for them. It's a great way to get kids inspired while giving them a bit of direction.

My girls are using this for my home schooled girls and son. The text is fun and easy to follow for many ages. I enjoy teaching our language using this book alone (4th-5th graders).

About the Author
Dr. Pierre Rouzier is a family physician who practice sports medicine. He is a team physician at the University of Massachusettts at Amherst and assistant professor in the department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Massachusetts Family Practice Residency. He has his certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. Dr. Rouzier has worked in the Indian Health Service with the White Mountain Apache tribe and has been the assistant director of the St. Mary's Family Practice Residency in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Dr. Rouzier enjoys mountain biking, running, downhill and cross-country skiing, coaching children's sports, and traveling. He and his wife, Arlene, have two sons, Anthony and Nicholas.

Use it everyday in Family Medicine Practice

I am a family physician 8 years out of residency.
I still use this almost everyday for help with diagnosis as well as guidelines for treatment.
Besides sports injuries it also has a helpful section on general workouts, pregnancy workouts, nutrition...
The only way this could be better is if you could get a CD or weblink to print out the handouts. I wore out the binding pretty quick laying it open on a copier.

Advanced Vim for beginners.

This book is an introduction to VimL (aka Vimscript), the language that allows
you to script the Vim text editor. Since Vim is also scriptable in, among
others, Perl, Ruby or Python, one might have doubts about the relevance of
learning yet another language, let alone a language that is useless outside
the text editor, and, according to some, a not very well-made language at
that. The answer is that all (not too old) versions of Vim support VimL,
whereas support for other languages depends on the installation; in other
words, a plugin in VimL is portable. As a personal note, I used to script Vim
mostly in Lua before I ran into trouble with Vim on another computer. Since
then, I use VimL exclusively.

Add to that that VimL is really simple to learn, and integrates perfectly with
the rest of Vim (whereas the mixing of Vim commands and non-VimL scripting can
be painful), and you'll definitely want to use it more than any other language
of whatever reputation. Oh, you might choose to use no language at all, and
not script Vim; but then, it's like driving a sports car (an SUV, really) and
choose to remain in second gear.

Now, given that Vim has an excellent help system, why would you need a book to
learn VimL? Because Vim's help is a reference manual and isn't meant as a
practical introduction. This book, on the other hand, is not a reference at
all, but takes you by the hand to build a real working plugin step by step. In
other words, you'll learn by doing, here creating an interface to MPC, itself
an interface to MPD, itself a great way to listen to music.

The book addresses everything from variable types to mappings, including
autoloading (postponing the reading of script files until necessary, thus
avoiding long startup), working with file types, or highlighting code. A lot
is reviewed in the process, and there is a lot to learn if you're new to VimL.
As this is a primer (so the author don't spend too many pages on explanation),
you'll probably scratch your head from time to time, getting stuck in some
places; but then Vim's ":help" command will be exactly what you need. In other
words, this book is like a map: you know where everything is, although you
don't know the details. The details are in Vim itself.

And now for the big question: should you buy this book? The answer is no if
you're looking for a way to learn Vim in general (this is a book about VimL
only!), or if you already know you way in VimL (though you might learn a few
things). But it is a yes if you want a simple yet systematic approach to VimL:
after reading this book, you'll be able to write a plugin, and if you ever do
so, you'll be able to review each and every step and make sure you forget
nothing. With time, you'll probably turn more and more to Vim's internal help,
and forget about this book: but isn't it what a primer is about?

"The VimL Primer", by Benjamin Klein, takes the reader for a guided tour inside the Vim scripting language, touching upon a selection of topics while putting together an example of Vim plugin.

The book is concise, nicely typeset and easy to read.

I appreciate the choice of the various topics: from the classical details of the vim scripting language, such as data types and looping constructs, to the vim configuration, such as the layout of the .vim directory, down to more editing specific aspects, such as buffers, windows and syntax highlighting. Details are tastefully cherry-picked from the vim documentation, and whenever you want more ":help xyz" is your friend.

All in all, a nice contribution, well suited both for reading while sitting at the terminal, experimenting with the many code snippets, as well as for "half-asleep-train-or-underground-reading" while heading towards/back from a day full of exciting vim editing!

TL-DR: I liked the book but don't have anything very specific to say about it.

I had heard about his book in the Pragmatic Bookshelf newsletter, and I had looked at it a little, being very interested by the Vim text editor.

But at that time I had such a long backlog of ebooks I'd bought but not read yet that I refrained from buying yet another one.

That said, when Ben Klein asked on the vim_use mailing list if anybody would be interesting in reviewing his book I jumped on the occasion, and so the book leapfrogged the many others on my waiting list.

I started reading it right away, then got sidetracked, then started reading it again, then again left it for a few months.
Finally I started again and read it all, a couple of pages a day, over a little less than a month.

It's a pretty short book (about 60 pages), so you could really read it much faster, in one or two evenings I guess.

I liked it a lot. It gives a very good overview of the various things that can be involved in making a Vim plugin.

The example the book used (interacting with a music library, displaying the list of songs and playing them from the editor) is well-chosen, it's very easy to get your head around and allows us to learn many aspects that might be needed in a Vim plugin.

Not everybody will want to write a Vim plugin, but most Vim users will probaby want to customize their .vimrc, and learning a bit about how plugins are structured is interesting in its own way.

I bought this book with recommendation from my Lab instructor. I can not express enough, how much I have used this book. It has become a Clinical Lab Math Bible!! It goes into great detail of each step and gives plenty of examples and practice problems for reinforcement. It is a great book and much cheaper to purchase through Amazon.

Excellent Introduction to the study of Dinosaurs

This book is a basic introduction to the study of dinosaurs. It briefly covers the history of paleontology in general and of dinosaur paleontology specifically. The reader will learn what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur, and why other reptiles aren't. It covers the major divisions of dinosaurs with brief descriptions of all of the large subgroups. If you're looking for a book that will get you beyond general audience level without requiring years of other studies to understand, this will be a good choice.

Jurassic Success

This author is fabulous! Oh, I wish I could shake his hand. This lovely gentleman wrote very clear text that is easy to understand. He gets to the point and offers extra information in green boxes. These boxes contain very interesting information and I was glad to read them. He provides plenty of anatomical depictions of dinosaurs so that readers can identify them clearly. The author didn't seem to show bias either. He justly pointed out whenever science failed to provide concrete answers or evidence to dinosaur behavior or physiology. I appreciate the fact that he explained disagreements between paleontologists and offered several angles to anything that was debated or otherwise uncertain.

Dinosaurs the textbook

I have used two editions of this book as one of the texts for a general vertebrate paleontology course. The class, organismic biology majors, with some secondary science, PE., elementary education and geography majors, liked the clear writing, statement of objectives, and reviews of each chapter. Diagrams were also clear. It perhaps needs more background on plate tectonics, stratigraphy/sedimentation and extinction/bird origins.

Neglected gem of Fichte's popular works

This is a review of the importance of this work by Fichte, not the translation, which is more or less accurate to Fichte's German.

The Characteristics of the Present Age belongs with Fichte's popular works, for they were given publically and were intended to work out the implications of his transcendental idealism for practical matters such as history and politics. In this, these lectures serve an analogous function to Hegel's own lectures on the philosophy of history (given as college lectures and not public talks per se), though Fichte's lectures have never served as popular introductions to his speculative philosophy, as Hegel's lectures on the philosophy of history did for his thought. Indeed, Fichte's Characteristics of the Present Age have suffered from benign neglect in the non-German speaking world; while the various editions of the difficult and even byzantine Wissenschaftslehre are studied regularly, Characteristics is relegated to obscurity as an idiosyncratic statement on historical necessity by a philosopher about to be eclipsed by younger, more radical thinkers such as Hegel. Collingwood (1994:108) sums up much of the scholarship dealing with Fichte's philosophy of history: "The chief difficulty which a reader finds in dealing with Fichte's view of history is the difficulty of being patient with what appears so silly," though he does not think that this verdict is completely warranted, and for good reason. For just as Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre is widely recognized as the most important link in the development of idealism from Kant to Hegel, so is Characteristics the single most important link between Herder's romantic appropriation of the philosophy of history from Voltaire, and the full flowering of philosophy of history in Hegel. Herder provided the impetus for looking at historical ages as actual histories which had value in and of themselves; Fichte is able to take these histories, more specifically the history of his own time, and infuse them with a universal philosophy which, though Herder had warned against such all-encompassing systems of thought, was able to perfectly catch the Zeitgeist of the emerging nineteenth century political and philosophical ferment. Though it remained for Hegel to make the philosophical understanding of history truly philosophical in a way that his contemporaries would embrace, Fichte is the first important post-Kantian philosopher to offer a comprehensive system of history and philosophy which attempts to come to terms with both actual history, and universal philosophical claims.
