About the Author
Cathy Glass has been a foster carer for over 20 years, during which time she has looked after more than 50 children, of all ages and backgrounds. Cathy runs training courses on fostering for her local Social Services, and helps draft new fostering procedures and guidelines. Cathy has three teenage children of her own; one of whom was adopted after a long-term foster placement.

Cathy Glass's "Cut"

A story that is hard to read (in terms of subject matter), and yet worth the effort. Dawn is the second child Cathy Glass and her husband fostered, and she's a very disturbed girl. Rejected by her parents and running from secrets she believes are too horrible to redeem, Dawn is broken and lost. At 13 she stays out all night, drinks, cuts herself, skips school, and attempts suicide more than once. But she can also be a pleasant and agreeable child who shows affection and seeks the approval of her caregivers.

This story is easy to read in terms of language choice and narrative flow, and difficult in terms of subject matter. Seeing Dawn's story unfold and feeling Cathy's love, concern, frustration, and despair provides a visceral, moving experience. I felt for Cathy, sympathizing with her desire to provide Dawn the loving, stable environment the girl desperately needed, but unable to overcome a broken system and even more broken girl. I was frustrated for her, John, and Barbara. I felt each of them wanted what was best for Dawn, even Barbara, in her own flawed way. But the system, meant to help threatened and disadvantaged children, seemed to do more harm than good. My heart broke for Dawn, and the more Cathy revealed about her past, the more I hoped she would somehow be able to turn it all around and claim the happy life she deserved.

While I enjoyed the story a great deal, I can only give 4 stars because I felt Glass occasionally went into far too much detail. There's a fine line between providing enough detail to orient the reader fully within with story, and too much detail. I felt a number of the instances of "I did this, followed by this, followed by this" neither advanced the plot nor revealed necessary information about the people involved. I found there were passages I wanted to skip just to get back to the plot, and that was discouraging.

look into foster care

Having been a foster parent in the United States, I can relate to Cathy's portrayal of how social workers "dump" teens on unsuspecting caregivers without telling the whole story, and how they ignore the possible harm that can come to your own children. In addition, she details how frequently the demands of the teen is considered more important than the normal houserules of the foster parents.

Cut is a story of one teen who has extremely serious issues that is placed with Cathy, who has a newborn of her own. The social worker REFUSES to allow any disclosurwe of the true events that caused her to come into the system in the first place, and basically allows the teen to make up her own rules such as being allowed to be out for periods where she does not have to account for her whereabouts.

Although some of the problems have recently been resolved (dumping kids without proper background information}, the overworked social workers who have to find homes for unwanted children in a system that is already overloaded and understaffed still exists.

In "Cut," Cathy tells the story of one 13 year old who had a past that created such severe problems in her that the child could be considered unsafe in a "normal" home. The way Cathy and her husband stuck it out and worked with this child is amazing. Cathy does an amazing job of telling the story in such a way that the reader can feel the severe pressure of all involved - the family, the child, the social workers, etc.

All of Cathy's books should be read by anyone considering becoming a foster parent, because they allow readers to see the dedication that is required, how they may have to fight "the system," and finally, how those who can handle the stress can help a child turn their lives around.

Certainly a book that makes you pause and look at troubled teenagers through a different set of lenses. "Cut" is not only well written, it is completely engrossing. You will cry, laugh, and learn to love along with Cathy as she tries desperately to parent Dawn. A great read!

ASCP/Pearson VUE testing NAACLS approved

I used this required text to pass the ASCP exam that the CA Dept of Health requires in order to gain licensure. The text had all topics that were on exam. I tested at the Pearson VUE center in Anaheim, CA. Pearson also happens to be the publisher of this text. It is an easy read, compared to what I have seen out there. The format is very close to what is on the state board exam. Cannot beat the price, as it was over 100 bucks at the campus bookstore. The book was required for an accredited, NAACLS program I completed. It is the same book they used at CAL State Long Beach, CA. when the phlebotomy program was offered there.

I used the 8th edition so I know for a fact how good is this hanbook!!! The 9th edition has everything the 8th edition, plus new updates and a new way of showing the information for people like me stufying Phlebotomy, Medical Lab Technicians and more!!! It's awesome!!!

Many Errors

This book was decent for a lot of the basic material but it includes a lot of things that does not apply to phlebotomists as well as some information that is just wrong. For instance, there is a procedure for drawing blood from a port which is something a phlebotomist can not do! A nurse has to do that so why would they even have a procedure for us?

Anyway, still lots of good information about diseases, hard sticks and general phlebotomy topics.

Best outpatient pocket Pediatrics book out there!

I am a FNP student, so I work primarily in the clinic setting. This book is fantastic. It is exactly what I was looking for. It has everything from diagnosis and treatment for otitis media to ADHD to eczema to asthma. It has growth charts, immunization charts, common fractures and more. It has clear, concise charts so the information is easy to find. I added my own colored tabs so I could easy flip to what I am looking for.
I agree with other reviewers that the print is pretty small. It's equal to about a 6 or 8 point font. I am willing to deal with that to have everything I need in such a small book. This book is a little bit bigger than a regular 3x5 index card, and it's only 1/2 inch thick. It's very light weight, too. I prefer this book to the other 2 books that I purchased.

I had purchased 2 other books prior:
"Pocket Notebook: Pocket Pediatrics (MassGeneral Hospital)" and Clinical Coach for Nurse Practitioners. The Pocket Pediatric book (light blue cover) is more for inpatient. It covers many, many diseases and even has sections on pediatric emergencies- and PICU information. This didn't really pertain to what I am doing right now. The clinical coach book has a Pediatrics section which covers antibiotics, and lightly covers a few diseases (asthma, ADHD, etc), but I found that it really wasn't enough information, and the book is big. It's about 6x8, and 1 inch thick. What I did like about the clinical coach book is it has a differential diagnoses section that is easy to use. You find the symptom on the easy access tab, and flip to the page. The tables are colorful, and easy to read. There is one table in this book that I really love- it lists the most common antibiotics, and marks an 'X' for what it covers: CAP, sinusitis, OM, etc.

FNP practicing in pediatrics 10+ years. Never seen a resource as compact and thorough as this reference. Glad to see a reference that actually addresses more than just common illnesses that I don't even need a reference for like strep throat, OM, eczema etc. This little baby has nearly 300 pages of essential/useful information for the seasoned or unseasoned pediatric practitioner. Send one to your shopping cart and get busy healing children and keeping them healthy. 2 thumbs (and 2 great toes) up!

Each room becomes a starting point for a free-ranging discussion of rarely noticed but foundational aspects of social life. A visit to the kitchen prompts disquisitions on food adulteration and gluttony; a peek into the bedroom reveals nutty sex nostrums and the horrors of premodern surgery; in the study we find rats and locusts; a stop in the scullery illuminates the put-upon lives of servants. Bryson follows his inquisitiveness wherever it goes, from Darwinian evolution to the invention of the lawnmower, while savoring eccentric characters and untoward events (like Queen Elizabeth I's pilfering of a subject's silverware). He uses the old house with its long history and mundane domestic items to explore the evolution of the home. His detailed tour is a seamless meandering from room to room, subject to subject, with fascinating digressions. He touches on how the hall evolved from a grand room, the most important in the house, to just a place to “wipe feet and hang hats”; how rooms developed based on changing notions of utility and privacy; how the development of the fireplace led to the development of the second floor. He offers historical and cultural origins of the names of rooms and common household items: table, chair, cookware, bedchamber, closet, study. He details how the development of different materials—bricks to make chimneys and coal for fuel—changed housing construction. The chapter on the kitchen prompts a discourse on food contamination, ice and mason jars, cookbooks and measuring utensils. We enjoyed it very much

Bill Bryson never disappoints and this book is no exception. I read it several years ago, recommending it to everyone I knew. Such fascinating material for him to work with and he works with all material so well. When I saw it was available in an audio book I decided to buy it for an upcoming drive from Florida to New England. We enjoyed it very much. Nothing personal to the author but I know he's an American so I did find his British "ness" terminology a bit annoying. Having lived overseas for many years and knowing many people taught in British English, I full well know how easy it is to pick up their interesting terminology, still I found it somewhat difficult to put up with coming from a mostly American accent. . Overall though I enjoyed the audio version and I recommend it and the book itself highly.

Home Is Where The History Is

My expectations were that Mr. Bryson's book would cover different household items and traditions, but I was clearly mistaken. Each room that he investigates in his home is more a launching pad to cover topics that only remotely apply to the rooms. Darwin's theory of evolution, penile pricking rings, Otzi the Iceman, and rodents' qualities are but a few examples of odd tangents. Mercy, the man is all over the place in this thing but no matter. The information was still interesting. There are nineteen chapters covering from the building of his home in 1851 to the kitchen, the study, the dining room, the stairs, the cellar, the garden, the bedroom, the garden, and so on and so on until the author finishes up in the attic.

Mr. Bryson's playful curiosity about the world around him is infectious. Some topics, such as the bathroom and the difficulties of waste management prior to water treatment facilities made me queasy. I'll never complain about cleaning our toilets ever again. That's for sure. Ultimately, the book is chock full of many home qualities that we never or rarely wonder how they came into being. He also focuses a great deal of time on the oodles of lunatic Victorian mores that make me darned happy to be living in our more enlightened age. Heck, the whole book makes me happy that we have electricity, indoor plumbing, advanced medicine, mattresses, bathing and less draconian social services for the destitute.

'At Home' is not as entertaining as Mr. Bryson's 'A Walk in the Woods' but more informative. It is light reading, full of fun facts and an occasional dry sarcastic remark which always made me chuckle. If you're interested in something other than a murder mystery, science fiction, romance or whatnot then the author's easy-to-read book is a nice way to kill a few hours.

This very well written book takes the reader on a journey through history using the metaphor of home and domesticity. While the topics and figures encountered range in time, scale, and scope, taken together they paint a comprehensive picture of the amazing changes that occurred during the 19th century. As a reader, I was reminded of things I'd learned before and inspired to research more about new ones.

However many words there are for brilliant this is all of them!

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her ‘our little genius’. Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favourite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

So. Mr Carey. I have been waiting for another book in another series, some folks will know what I mean, but I thought hey, this one will do to be going on with. Especially when good blogger friend Kate waxed lyrical about it and told me I must read it. Frankly it wasnt a hard sell..

This is an INCREDIBLY difficult book to review without spoilers – I had no idea why Melanie was so special going in, and I’m not going to tell you either, but special she is. And not just because this is a clever, fascinating, addictive story about – ha see you nearly had me – its about THINGS OCCURRING - but because she is ridiculously easy to love, so well written is she. In fact all of the characters pop right off the page for one reason or another.You will either want to protect them with your life or shoot them in the head. Often with no inbetween.

Its a horror story. But not really. Its a fantasy. But then, no not really. There is certainly love there. And loss. And some stand out scene setting. And a heck of a lot of jaw dropping moments. And don’t start reading it just before bed time. You won’t sleep. For various reasons…not all of which will have to do with how eager you are to find out what happens.

When I read a book like this it reminds me why I love to read. Utterly compelling, taking you away from the madness of the real world and into the madness of another…offering a new twist on a popular theme and getting you right at the heart. RIGHT at the heart. Its only the end of January but I would be MOST surprised if this one doesnt end up in my top 5 of the year. And trust me, choosing last years top 5 was hard enough..

PLEASE be careful which reviews you read of this one before you dive in my reading friends. It really is best arrived at with a beautiful blissful ignorance.

An exceptional story, but ignore the synopsis; it's nothing like the writing in the book

The Girl with All the Gifts might be my favorite book of 2014 (so far). It’s certainly in my top 5. Before I discuss the book, I have to discuss the synopsis. I feel like I’ve been complaining about synopses a lot recently, usually because they don’t reflect the tone of the book. This is probably the most egregious example. The synopsis is written as though a very young child with a very limited vocabulary is speaking. You would rightfully assume that the book would be written in this same manner, but you would be wrong. WHY do marketers do this? Are they intentionally trying to turn off readers? I heard about this book from somewhere other than Goodreads, and I’m sure I would never had chosen to read it if he synopsis was all I had to go on. The main character is a 10 year old girl named Melanie, and I could understand the desire to write the synopsis in a young voice IF the MC had that same voice in a first person narrative. But that is not the case here. Melanie is a very intelligent girl, and the narrative is written with an intelligent tone in the third person and doesn’t reflect her voice at all.

Sorry to go on and on about this, but I don’t want the odd choice for the synopsis to discourage anyone from reading the book. Because ALL of you should want to read The Girl with All the Gifts, and I’m going to do my best to tell you why. I’m going to keep it vague, because you need to discover the secrets of the book for yourself.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic society in the U.K. Melanie and other children attend school classes, which seems normal enough on the surface, but it soon become apparent that something is not quite right, both with the children and with this school. We get hints of the nature of these differences early on, but it takes some time to learn what caused the apocalypse and how Melanie’s world reached this point.

Melanie has what could be called a childhood crush on her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau sees something in Melanie that stands out from the other children, and she can’t help responding to Melanie’s adoration, even though she tries to keep an emotional distance. Miss Justineau differs greatly from the other adults in Melanie’s life who treat her with apathy, at best, and shocking cruelty, at worst. It’s not hard to see why Melanie feels such affection for her teacher. The scenes between Melanie and Miss Justineau are heat-breaking. Melanie craves physical and emotional affection, just like every child deserves. But Miss Justineau can only do so much without risking her life and Melanie’s.

The Girl with All the Gifts starts out so strongly, and I thought that there was no way the story could maintain this pace. I was wrong, because the latter part of the book was even better. Melanie makes a decision at the end that has enormous implications. It affected me so much that it took a little while before I could even pick up another book. But was it the right decision? I think so, but that doesn’t mean that I was emotionally prepared for it.

If you choose to buy this book (and you should!). think twice about buying from Amazon. Aside from the obvious reasons, Amazon is selling this at list price. B&N, Powells, and possibly your local indie, too, are selling it for significantly less.

Intelligent and well crafted genre fiction

Do yourself a favour and don’t read the back cover of The Girl With All The Gifts. It won’t ruin the story for you but to my mind, when an author goes to the trouble to set up a clever opening to a well ploughed genre and then marketing decides to undercut that by telling you exactly what the book is like, because hey the point is shifting books… well…

If you like post apocalyptic thrillers with a decent scientific conceit underpinning it and an engaging read, go out and buy this book. Go, do it now.

But if you if you don’t really care or if you are one of those folk who like to know what the story is about before you go and make your investment, read on. But I am going to spoil it. Well, spoil it as much as the back cover does anyway.

All Melanie has ever known, all that she can remember is her room, the classroom, the showers and the corridor. Each day men in uniform come and collect her and take her to the classroom. She has a few different teachers, but her favourite is Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau teaches them about poetry, and Greek myth. The other teachers tell them about the time before the Breakdown, before the Hungries and the wild Junkers.

The back cover of my edition of The Girl With All The Gifts quotes Jenny Colgan of the Sunday Times as labelling it “Kazuo Ishiguro meets The Walking Dead”. I haven’t read any Ishiguro but the link to The Walking Dead sits uncomfortably with me (but I understand it’s shorthand for “this book has Zombies, shambling fans of the Walking Dead will love it”) or certainly not the most apt genre comparison one could make. I’d say it shares a family resemblance to certain works by Richard Matheson.

So yes it has Zombies. It has survivor tension and there is a race on to find a cure for the Hungry pathogen. As much as I like The Walking Dead, The Girl With All The Gifts is a much tighter and tense piece of work(maybe this is where the Ishiguro reference exerts itself) . The action set pieces are limited and brutal but this book earns praise for the maintaining the tension between the Survivors and drip feeding information about the Breakdown and the work towards a cure. This is no endless trudge, this book has a resolution, it has a finishing point and if you are very clued in to the hints Carey drops you might anticipate it. Looking back it’s a wonderful structured book with characters that we want to succeed against the worst Hungries and Humanity can throw up. It’s that hope I think that in the end masks the clues that Carey has dropped.

From a gender perspective The Girl With All The Gifts was good. The lead character is a young girl. The two scientists at the base where the story begins are female, two of the named teachers are female. Of the main cast three out of the five are women. Plenty of women talking to women about things other than men, sometimes not nice things but…

I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it movie form. I am not sure that it would survive the Hollywood concept of what makes for a good movie though. The Girl With All The Gifts is intelligent and well crafted genre fiction, and while I could put it down, it was very compelling and a joy to return to.
