‘Yes - it’s funny how we settle down at Kirrin so quickly,’ said Dick. ‘We only came yesterday, and I agree with you, Anne - it seems as if we’ve been here ages. I love Kirrin.’
‘I hope this weather lasts out the three weeks we’ve got left of the holiday,’ said Julian, rolling away from Timmy, who was pawing at him, trying to make him play. ‘Go away, Timmy. You’re too energetic. We’ve bathed, had a run, played ball - and that’s quite enough for a little while. Go and play with the crabs!’
‘Woof!’ said Timmy, disgusted. Then he pricked up his ears as he heard a tinkling noise from the promenade. He barked again.
‘Trust old Timmy to hear the ice-cream man,’ said Dick. ‘Anyone want an ice-cream?’
Everyone did, so Anne collected the money and went off to get the ice-creams, Timmy close at her heels. She came back with five cartons of ice-cream, Timmy jumping up at her all the way.
‘I can’t think of anything nicer than lying down on hot sand with the sun on every part of my body, eating an ice-cream, and knowing there are still three weeks’ holiday in front of us - at Kirrin too!’ said Dick.

About the Author
Matthias R. Mehl, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona. He received his doctorate in social and personality psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Over the last decade, he developed the electronically activated recorder (EAR) as a novel methodology for the unobtrusive naturalistic observation of daily life. He has given workshops and published numerous articles on novel methods for studying daily life. Dr. Mehl is a founding member and the current Vice President of the Society for Ambulatory Assessment.

Tamlin S. Conner, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Otago in New Zealand. She received her doctorate in social psychology from Boston College and completed postdoctoral training in health and personality psychology at the University of Connecticut Health Center. She has published numerous articles on the theory and practice of experience sampling; is a leading expert on ambulatory self-report techniques; and conducts research on well-being, emotions, and the science of self-report. Dr. Conner is a founding member and current executive committee member of the Society for Ambulatory Assessment.

An essential work for engineers and professional communicators

Nathans-Kelly and Nicometo offer in this slim volume a wealth of information for both technical professionals, who communicate much of their work through presentations, and professional communicators who design and build presentation graphics.

Informed by best practices and research on cognition and memory, as well as on graphic design principles, the authors present five "rules" for presentation slides:
1) Revisit presentation assumptions.
2) Write sentence headers.
3) Use targeted visuals.
4) Archive details for future use.
5) Keep looking forward.

Each of these rules is the subject of one to four chapters that expand on the rule and offer numerous examples and illustrations in both verbal and graphic form. Indeed, the scores of figures in the book are themselves an effective summary of the book's content. A reader can page through the volume and examine the figures and their captions, and gain an enormous amount of information by that simple act.

The rule that captured my attention and made me think about aspects of presentations that hadn't occurred to me before was #4, "Archive details for future use." Chapters 10 and 11 ("Make Slide Decks with Archival and Legacy Value" and "Include More than One Language") urge readers to think beyond the immediate purpose and audience of a presentation and about a slide deck's life after its initial use in a workplace meeting or professional conference.

Valuable resource for those wanting to challenge the status quo of presentations

For scientists, engineers, and technical professionals wanting to rise above the status quo of presentations in their field, Slide Rules is a valuable resource. The book is clear and direct in its advice. Moreover, the book supports that advice with logical arguments, a wealth of professional examples, and thoughtful reference listings.

As someone who has taught technical presentations in academia, government, and industry on four continents, I was particularly impressed by the frequently asked questions posed and then answered throughout the book. Yes, those are the questions that engineers, scientists, and technical professionals frequently ask, and the answers in Slide Rules are spot on.

Perhaps what most distinguishes book is that it covers in depth many important topics that other texts (including my own) skim or ignore. For instance, Slide Rules dives deeply into the question of how to archive presentations with a slide style based on visual evidence. The books also discusses the all too frequent situation of how to overcome a lousy corporate template. Third, the book does a great job of analyzing the process about how professionals in an organization come to put aside the status quo of PowerPoint’s defaults in favor of an assertion-evidence approach that follows psychology principles for how people learn.

A SOLID Four Stars

Preliminary: This review is for the 2nd Edition; it appears that the third edition has an additional author cited. I first came across this book in a library in Indianapolis. So I picked up a copy.

This book covers pretty much everything you need to know about Currency Trading including technical analysis, fundamentals, psychology, and the book even digs into details about the actual currency pairs.

I would say this book has great breadth, but not a lot of depth. For example, if you want to learn more about technical analysis, you will need to pick up another book because his coverage on indicators is pretty meager. Actually, I felt his coverage of fundamentals was more in-depth than technical analysis. You will find descriptions of patterns without an image to go along with it!

The book is lighter fare—so you should be able to digest ten or more pages in a single sitting.

Since I have read a number of other books, a good part of this book is just filler for me. Yet Brian does offer some specific insights and tidbits that augment my knowledge from other books; so I did read this book cover to cover. For example, he said, “don't adjust your take-profit targets without also adjusting your stop-loss order in the same direction.” This is the type of tidbit that I simply hadn't thought about before. Whether I actually choose to do this is not the point—the point is that I will give it some consideration. Thus, the breadth of Currency Trading For Dummies is worth the read, even if you have read a number of more “advanced” books.

Brian does work for FOREX.com, but he point this fact out a few times, and I didn't see any heavy pushing or the “big sell.” There may be a conflict of interest or bias for someone who hasn't chosen a broker—I don't really know because I chose a broker before reading the book.

My opinion: definitely worth the “used” price. I wouldn't use this as a “first” book for ForEx. I would go with Chen for that. But consider this for your “second” book.

Very Good, but has bias

The author knows a lot about Forex and overall this is a must-read book for anyone into this market. However, the author doesnt explain what ecn/stp/dd brokers are (and why you should run away from dd), tries to make the reader think that opening an account outside the USA is riskier, and finally states that leverage above 50:1 isnt a good thing. Perhaps all this is because the Author works for a dd (dealing desk) brokerage in the USA, where leverage is limited... All in all you should read this book, but be critical and dont take every statement as absolute truth, as there are interests in play here.

The first edition of "Currency Trading for Dummies' was published in 2007 and with the intervening four years, a roller coaster ride for investors, this new second edition can not come at a more convenient time. The 2007 version had two authors, Brian Dolan and Mark Galant, now Dolan remains as the sole author. The book retains its basic structure and accessible format; instructive, approachable, easy to read with a thorough index keyed to what the reader might be looking for. Some subsections have been pushed forward into other chapters and, more importantly, data on currency is updated and some explanations and examples have been brought current in referring to the events of 2008 - 2010. This is a fine and important addition to any investor's library written by experienced knowledgeable traders.

Clear and Helpful Book on the Jhanas

After nearly twenty years of teaching the jhanas (initially at Ayya Khema's request), Leigh Brasington has gathered his approach into a very useful book.

I have been on one of Leigh's retreats, and I got to read through an early draft of this book in 2013; I can highly recommend both. His approach to the jhanas is based primarily on the early suttas (in contrast to later traditions), and aims at making a realistic beginning that can be deepened with time and practice. Like his teacher Ayya Khema, he is relentless in framing the experience of the jhanas as a support for insight.

Wisdom distilled from helping thousands of students find and navigate these mindstates combines with a clear and nuanced reading of the relevant sutta texts.

This book is a practical nuts and bolts guide to Jhanas

There is no greater endeavor in this lifetime, than awakening. In particular, awakening to an experiential understanding of no-self. And quite frankly, dry Vipassana practice is a very hard way to do that, near impossible. I'm not sure why Jhana practice is not taught by the American Buddhist establishment, and even disparaged it would seem, but they're not doing their students any favors in that respect. As one exits Jhana, the mind is optimally calm, allowing a rare opportunity to practice insight. Optimally calm, because, at that time, the Hinderances are totally suppressed and one can witness the illusion of self re-asserts itself, re-assembling itself. But without the lucidity of the post-jhanic state, I just don't see how Realization is possible.
This is the only practical book I have seen on Jhana practice that guides the meditator, one step at a time, how to meditate the way the Buddha taught it to his monks , even if you're just starting out. We all are starting out, over and over, when we sit in meditation. And it's written in the simplest non technical style so it is totally accessible. This book deserves reading and re-reading and I bet you'll feel the same.

Brasington’s book is one of at least three to appear this fall (two others are Richard Shankman’s and Culadasa John Yates’s) that help us reintegrate and rebalance the Buddha’s teachings about mindfulness, samadhi (concentration), and insight. Any perusal of early Buddhist texts reveals that these are not three separate aspects of the path of practice but rather are meant to be developed in concert, each supporting the others. This book helps reset the balance among the factors of the path by significantly turning up the importance of cultivating a collected mind in the mix relative to the emphasis frequently given mindfulness in western Buddhist practice.

Brasington's direct and conversational tone, and his focus throughout the book on practical approaches to developing and sustaining an undistracted and clear mind, help demystify the process of cultivating mind-states in which liberating insights can arise. His method focuses on following the pleasures and more ever more subtle beneficial qualities that arise in meditation into ever deeper and stiller places. This is a very powerful technique because the pleasures of meditation, which were highly praised and often recommended by the Buddha, help us stop chasing after pleasures that can't last and that are dependent on exterior external conditions being arranged just so, something we just can't control in life.

The most important thing to say about the method presented in this book, which the author (on pages 39 and 160) explicitly makes clear is just his method, the method he learned from his teacher, is that it actually works in practice. I and many others can attest to its effectiveness in our own meditative experiences: among many ways into great stillness of mind, the way Brasington teaches is a very natural and easy way that anybody can cultivate.

Some critics may say that Brasington’s method is invalid because it isn't spelled out in the early texts or later commentaries. But, as Brasington notes, the instructions available to us in the early texts are elliptical in the extreme: the practice of meditation in the Buddhist traditions has always been passed on from teacher to student, with the teacher tailoring and adjusting techniques so that each student can master the practices and put them to use in cultivating insight.

It's silly to debate whether a technique is orthodox and correct if it works: the Buddha only cared about one thing, ending suffering, and any technique that works for you toward this end is the “right” technique. (The Buddha did hold that all awakening happens in fundamentally the same way—by not clinging to experience as “me” or “mine”—but individuals develop their own understanding of this way and their own toolboxes of techniques tailored to their life histories and personalities.)

Brasington is one of the few authors who discuss ways into the four immaterial realms in addition to the classic jhanas, describing how to access them and use them. Here too, he provides simple instructions that work; again, there are other ways in, but the approaches he describes are natural and easy. Anyone who has stilled the mind through his previous instructions can keep going over time into places/spaces that are increasingly spacious and boundless in quality. As Brasington emphasizes, all of these states are all naturally occurring states of mind that were cultivated from ancient times in India: the Buddha saw that they could be used to prepare the mind for letting go and Brasington encourages us to use them to this same end.

In the second half of the book, Brasington presents textual analysis to show that his instructions for cultivating an undistracted mind are in accord with texts in the pre-commentarial tradition. This section provides a refreshing addition to our understanding, with many original comments and corrections. In particular, Brasington’s work to unpack the meaning of key terms in the various texts provides one more nail in the coffin of the idea that somehow the later commentaries are more useful than the suttas (the early discourses that capture the Buddha’s teachings) in understanding how meditation practice develops. Simply put, the commentaries perform scholastic contortions in an attempt to make the teachings of the suttas internally consistent; but the Buddha’s teachings simply don’t appear to have been designed to work this way, being practical approaches to ending suffering rather than philosophical or theoretical offerings.

One of the many beauties of this second part of the book is that Brasington shows that any practitioner can make use of the early Buddhist discourses to guide his or her practice in ways that lead toward freedom. You don't have to be an academic or even an intellectual to enter the thought-world of the discourses, soak up their beautiful and inspiring language, and be guided by the wisdom of the teachings they hold. And, in these early teachings, there is a constant and thorough-going emphasis on the importance of cultivating an undistracted, clear, and still mind in order to create a field for penetrating insight into the nature of all experience. With a method convincingly based in the suttas, Brasington takes us right into the very heart of this practice.

Useful pulmonary physiology introduction and reference

I used this book for my pulmonary block in medical school. If you like to preview topics before class, this book covers everything that will be discussed. It's also good for clarifying the more difficult concepts from lecture. The book goes into more detail than is strictly required for basic medical pulmonology (e.g. derivations of mathematical representations of concepts), however, the biggest ideas are well-summarized at the end of each chapter in the practice question section. Taking into account the relatively low cost, short length, and usefulness as a reference and practice question bank, I recommend this book for medical school pulmonary coursework.

THE book on respiratory physiology.

I had a much earlier version of this book for medical school and often found myself wanting to revisit the principles outlined by West. So, I got this recently. It is such an easy read with no fluff. The true sign of a teacher is someone able to take a complex subject and simplify it for the learner. West does this impeccably. This can easily be read in a day without much effort. It's too bad all physiology isn't presented in such a manner. Thank you John West!

Perfect size and scope

The book is written concisely, and is easy to read. It follows a logical pathway through the components of the respiratory system, but doesn't add more than you need for a general understanding. 1st year SRNA student.

Still using Swing instead of JavaFX.

I've owned a number of Deitel editions in the past -- early editions were very weak and had a number of errors, but they improved as newer editions appeared. I'm going back to Java programming after being away since version 6, which I knew very well, and was especially interested in GUIs written in JavaFX and FXML. I've done a lot of Swing programming in the past and JavaFX, as of version 8, is a huge leap forward. Unfortunately this book is still firmly in the Swing era and has relatively little on JavaFX as one can see from the table of contents and other reviewers. The rest of the book may be fine. Because I have another reference, Core Java for the Impatient by Horstmann, which covers other new features of Java 8 for the experienced programmer, little coverage of JavaFX in the Deitle book iis a deal breaker. Three stars because of use of the antiquated Swing emphasis.

It's more of a reference manual than a study guide. All explanations, no tutorials / self-exercises. You can't learn by watching, you need to try stuff on your own and this book doesn't help with learning.

If you have had the previous version of this book, the majority of the book is the same. The difference though is the features in version 8.

Streams (not to confuse this with IO Streams), Lambda Expressions, and for designers: Javafx are all covered. Although not in great detail, the Deitel clan always give you a spring board to launch yourself in the right direction.

If you are new to the Java language this book will definitely have you comfortable coding in Java when you are done with it.

If you already code in Java but want to see what the new features are all about this book gives a nice explanation of the new SE8 features, but leave you with more to be desired. Honestly they cover just enough to get started and being that you code in Java already you are very familiar with Oracles online documentation (hopefully). The combination of the two are easily enough overview.

If you like books that walk you through one program through the entire booK, this is not the book. This book has "scriptlets" for each topic. The best thing about that is you are not constrained to following the book from beginning to end. You can use this book as a reference (which I do), opening up to any chapter and learning about the topic from there.

I gave this book a 4 because the topics explained are explained well. The code is to the point. And for each topic you get a nice foundation that you can apply your imagination to in your projects. Only three reasons I didn't give it a 5: much of the same material from the previous version, doesn't go into considerable depth of some of the topics (especially JavaFX), and because nothing in life is perfect. Lol.
