I have seen a lot of tattoo learning or apprentice style books, this one is very direct and to the point - gets it done in a text book style. Easy to read. I run a tattoo school on the East coast - and I require all the students who complete my 6 month intro course to read this. The only way you can really learn to tattoo is from an apprenticeship - we just try to prep them for a fast track into the apprenticeship so they can focus on their artwork and this book really helps us get them on track. I wrote this book because I really believe in helping aspiring artists become professional tattooers. I think that information sharing is really important. We put training videos on the website for artists to supplement their apprenticeship. Trying to keep this relatively brief, I think its only right to give a bit of background as to where this reveiw comes from. I'm an artist in other mediums that has supported myself nicely for over
20 years,but have always been extremely interested in tattooing and beautification of the body. Unfortunatly still to this day many in the tattoo field want to make it seem as if the art form is some
secret, mysterious and unattainable cult that can only be bestowed upon those few who are chosen to "pay their dues" by the "old school" method of being an indentured slave for some time period.
Apprentiseship is not the same thing as slavery. I started late and couldn't afford that luxury. So I tried to learn and read and research and practice as much as I could and still do.
With all that said, the reason Mr Jordan gets my 5 stars is for what he is trying to create. He's attempting to create a community of people that are interested in this art form so that they can get
accurate information, not only through his book, but by attaching it to an open forum on the internet. In other words, I believe he is being truthful about the art of tattoo. The only way to become good
at any art is with talent, learning and hard work.
I have studied many books and other information on tattooing and I don't think any get 5 stars for content. There are many different opinions, even between the more well known artists out there.
Sometimes the website can be a bit sparse and erratic, but he certainly gives you an understanding of all the basics and seems to be a work in progress. Combined with the book, and the desire and guts
to make it available to those who make an effort, I certainly say thanks and give him 5 stars!

Added note: he has been very helpful whenever I have contacted him on the website( I hope he doesn't mind me saying ) doing all this while risking his life for our freedom being deployed over in the
gulf.

Pretty good Info

I found this book to be helpful in many areas. I tattoo, but wanted to understand more of the technical aspect of it. This book helped me understand better how a machine works, & how to tweak my machine to my liking. You won't read this book & open your own shop the next day, but there is a lot of good information in all aspects of tattooing. Including how to deal with customers, drawing deposits, aftercare, etc. I recommend this book to someone who wants to understand their trade better.

IMHO - An excellent resource for the beginning artist!

It's only the second tattoo beginner's book I've read this month, but I personally found it superior to the first (The Complete Art of Tattooing - Erick Alayon). This book breaks down the art of tattooing into easy to follow fundamental sections. In the early part of the book it even defines a set of landmarks the beginning artist should accomplish prior to putting needle to skin. It's everything the beginning artist needs in their first book. It touches on all aspects of the industry and process of tattooing. I highly recommend it to the beginning artist.

My favorite thing about this book is that the author gives the reader a of list of retailers for equipment and supplies after each respective section. Like other beginner's books he stresses the importance of an apprenticeship, and informs beginning artists that quality equipment and supplies from many renowned retailers will only sell to licensed tattoo shops.

About the Author
Christian Emery is a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Plymouth, UK. He was previously a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the London School of Economics. He is the author of several articles and book chapters on US foreign policy and US-Iranian relations and has written for a variety of mainstream media outlets. He is currently working on a collaborative research project which examines Iranian national role conceptions.

This is an excellent analysis of America's policies toward Iran during the 1978-79 Iranian Revolution. Using primary sources, like documents and interviews, Dr. Emery really seems to grasp the true dynamics of US policy during and after the revolution. More importantly, he delves deep into important historical debates, particularly the mystery surrounding an American effort to provide the Bazargan government with intelligence on Iraq just prior to the Iranian hostage crisis. For those who are interested in the origins of America's policies toward Iran, this book is a must read.

About the Author

Douglas P. Douglas Fry is professor of anthropology at the Abo Akedemi in Finland and an adjunct research scientist at the University of Arizona. His long-term interest is in understanding conflict and conflict resolution. His goal in this book is to counter what he calls the "neo-Hobbesian" view that prehistoric human communities, overwhelmingly hunter-gatherer in organization, were overwhelmingly fierce and war-like. He does this mostly by reviewing what we know about existing simple societies of the hunter-gatherer type.

Fry's is a marvelous way to gain insight into human possibilities. We lived most of our evolutionary history in hunter-gatherer societies, so human nature is without doubt the product of the social relations of hunter-gatherer life. Fry shows, through analyzing a welcome variety of small-scale societies that virtually every such society has complex and sophisticated rules for avoiding and resolving conflict, and there are many such societies that simply do not engage in warfare. Fry therefore uses anthropological evidence to persuade the reader that warfare in human society is not inevitable, and that human nature includes many tools for the peaceful resolution of conflict.

A second claim Fry puts forward in this book is that warfare is in fact uncommon in modern-day hunter-gatherer societies, and probably was uncommon in our Pleistocene hunter-gatherer past, To show this, he provides much argument but little evidence. Moreover, my colleague Samuel Bowles has recently completed a careful study of the extent of war among both prehistoric and historic hunter-gathers and comes to the opposite conclusion (Samuel Bowles, "Did Warfare Among Ancestral Hunter-Gatherers Affect the Evolution of Human Social Behaviors?" Science 324:1293--1298. He included the eight ethnographic sources and the fifteen archeological sources containing the relevant data on the fraction of adult males that perished in war, as opposed to natural causes and intra-group violence. He found that the ethnographic and archeological sources indicated a mean between 12% and 16% war mortality.

Moreover, Bowles found that this level of warfare was sufficient to explain a high level of intra-group altruistic predispositions in humans. If Bowles is correct, and if there are no other factors promoting human altruism, we are in the curious position of being the most prosocial and cooperative species outside the eusocial insects precisely because we are among the most warlike of social species. I suspect there is a lot more to be said on this topic, and I suspect that there are sources of human solidarity and altruism beside war. However, there is every reason to believe that Fry is correct is stressing the possibility of conciliation and peace in the future of our species, and his book is a welcome addition to the literature on the topic.

A Fantastic Book

There are plenty of self-proclaimed "realists" advancing the argument that war comes naturally to human beings, but few scholars with the knowledge to effectively question that view and the writing ability to make their challenge a pleasure to read. Fry is one of them.

I won't get into the debate itself, better to buy the book and let Fry lay it out for you. I would, however, disagree with the previous reviewer about the importance of defining "war" before concluding that it is pervasive in human life. As Fry shows quite convincingly, you can only make the case for the universality of "war" if you define it as just about any lethal violence between three or more people. So a jealous man and his brother killing a third man (even within the same community) is considered to be "war" in these studies. Very misleading, dishonest science.

The example from New Guinea is equally misleading. The reviewer is correct about the aggressive relations between groups there, but does he really think a tightly-packed island is a relevant model for the conditions in which human beings evolved? The world was a big, empty place from the perspective of early humans. Walking away from conflict was always an option. By the time studies were conducted in New Guinea, population density had reached a point where there was no place left to go in order to avoid conflict. This is more relevant to present conditions than to prehistory.

But the reviewer's point about whether or not there is a universal human propensity to behave aggressively toward those not in our group (language, culture) is a good one. My reading of Fry's argument is that he acknowledges that humans have the "capacity" for violence, but not necessarily the "tendency." Obviously, we are capable of horrible brutality, but the notion that it comes naturally to us is belied by the severity and ubiquity of post-traumatic stress in those who have acted in violence -- other than psychopaths. Wolves and sharks don't suffer after having killed. Humans, by and large, do.

In any case, I highly recommend Beyond War to anyone who wants to hear the other side of the story, and who wants to enjoy themselves as they learn.

Fry shreds it up

This is the best book on "primitive" warfare out there for the basic reader currently (until Brian Ferguson releases later work). He shreds all the current anthropological arguments for humans being innately geared towards warfare whether biologically or through bogus surveys of primatology, ethnography or archaeology.

Fry correctly makes the distinction between nomadic hunter-gatherers being completely different from tribal horticulturalists and sedentary foragers when it comes to using them as exemplary models of lacking warfare. He covers their mechanisms of nullifying disputes and their kinship structure that prevents organized warfare.

The last chapter is pretty weak, but if you need a readable starting point for the anthropological dialog of warfare - this is the KEY place to start. if you dont have that above distinction in mind with nomadic foragers, your whole perspective is useless.

Informative book

It is dammed true that the ESP8266 is not an easy programming to understand like its name, but this author has made it a bit easy. I've been very inquisitive about the ESP8266, and I started to search over the internet but I didn’t get enough data. Then I got this book. It was precisely what I needed to get started with EsP8266, node MCU, and Lua with a slight amount of concern. The clarifications were detailed enough, and the example code helps you be productive faster. I am sure this is a handy book for the reader so, I recommend it.

Pass on this one

Very little usable info on "Programming NodeMCU using Arduino IDE" - little more than a few (short) pages on writing a "Hello World" program.
A quick read (not in a good way)...giant font, wide margins, big pictures and lots of white space - literally read the entire book cover to cover in 5 minutes, and wondered why anyone would try to pass this off as a legitimate programming book - it reads more like a children's book or student's book report.
If you're looking for information on how to program NodeMCU, I recommend passing on this book.

Useless drivel

I bought this book based on its title, which certainly makes it sound like a technical brief on how to get into ESP8266 development using the NodeMCU tool with Arduino's IDE.

WRONG!

This is some high schooler's Tech-201 term paper. It's a slim volume and I'd tell you how few pages it is but -- oops! -- the pages aren't numbered! So ergo, no TOC worth looking at and of course, no index to help find stuff. The text is littered with spelling and syntactical errors.

Almost all of the text in the book is mindless piffle about the Internet of Things. If you are looking to do dev with the ESP8266 you surely already know about the IoT -- and have probably already forgotten more than the poor devil who wrote this mishmash.

There are about 12 to 15 pages of actual ESP8266 information, most of which consist of the source code for two LED blinkers, one that runs autonomously and one that offers a web page to let the user turn the LED on or off. Both of these programs are offered in the "Examples" code once you've loaded NodeMCU into Arduino. In these pages are a few screenshots to illustrate what the author is saying. Unfortunately the part of the screenshot that illustrates the text was truncated in the printing process in many cases.

The most important point the author could have given about NodeMCU is missing entirely, so having doped it out on my own, I will tell you myself. It is that the IoT programming platform NodeMCU is being used in this instance as a software "glue" module to allow the Arduino IDE to be used for ESP8266 development. That is, the IDE thinks it's talking to a USB-connected board but it's actually interfaced to a front end for NodeMCU while the NodeMCU normal back end functionality handles the actual ESP8266 development board hardware. Once you understand this, the rest is pretty straightforward.

I've returned my copy. Please don't put yourself in the position of having to return yours too. Don't buy it!

There are like 4 or 5 mini books inside

I couldn't even finish this! Contains spoilers! There are like 4 or 5 mini books inside. I got through the first one really easy and I liked it. But then 1/2 way through the 2nd book I got bored and started flipping through the rest of the book. The heroine literally drives me insane, the hero drives me insane. I usually love stepbrother romances, and I love bad boy alpha males even more. But these 2 were so flipping annoying, wavering back and forth about do I love him, do I love her, we can't do this because we are step siblings. The book could have been written in 200 pages not over 400. And I read the last book just to see how the book ended. And after all of that it's not even really a happy ending. They kind of get back together at the end. It just ended and at their parent's wedding, so it wasn't even really like they were step siblings for the entire book. I really hate giving bad reviews but I can't honestly say I would recommend this to my friends.

• H is a disgusting, unapologetic CHEATER and a nasty über manwhore. He flaunts a "floozy" in front of h to hurt her so she will hate him. H sleeps his way through 17+ of the female recruits, including the h.
• h is awful and absolutely annoying. She forgives H way too easily.

~Not even a very good ending!!!

~Book is way too long...470 pages, ugh.

~Writing & editing leave A LOT to be desired.

an ok read, but too long and drawn out

Having served in the US Army, I found the inaccuracies with the ranking and titles annoying as hell as well as some editing issues. I've experienced being among the 1st group of females in basic training within a formerly all male unit/brigade at Ft Dix, and most of Charlie's initial sexual antics were disgusting, outrageous and warranted disciplinary action. For me, the story was too convoluted with the addition of Charlie's father and potential step-sibling situation. Hannah and Charlie were often unlikable to me so I wish their characters had been more developed because they literally kept making the same mistakes over and over again ad naseum. Then at the last 4 pages, they figure their mess out.

Real Java for the real world - an all around good book.

I've read many books on Java, and they're all the same cr*p. For a small work, this book certainly packs some punch. It touches upon many interesting topics, such as MVC frameworks, Java for networking, and even Java3D! It is worded in a way which enables the reader to easily map what they read into a conceptual thought.

Incredibly Information-Dense but Clear

I picked this book up as an impulse buy the last time I went book browsing in the physical world. It was one of the better purchases I made that day; I've been so impressed that I came here to search for more books by the same author.
The content level of Key Java is head and shoulders above most java books. Those few books with comparable content usually fail in some other dimension (clarity, accessibility, brevity, completeness, non-trivial examples). The writing style is a bit dry and academic, but the author is obviously no stranger to serious programming.
Many java books are filled with either relentlessly detailed - but not informative - examination of the topic, or with smoothly written but empty prose. Key Java's chapters are excellently written for "I need it NOW" reading, and each one clearly explains the topic, both in concept and in practice. I won't say you'll be able to read through a chapter and become a master of the topic; some of these topics are seriously complex and take some measure of mulling over and contemplation. But invariably, in the past, when I've tackled a new concept in Java, I've had to read the same topic in five or more different books to get the complete picture. This is not the case with _Key Java_.
This book easily makes it into my top five favorite java books, and is contending with a few others (Bruce Eckel's _Thinking In Java_, etc) for the #1 position. However, Key Java's approach and nuts 'n bolts discussions of advanced-but-not-theoretical java topics make it much more of a complementary book than a competitor, a fine addition to any java bookshelf.
One thing I'm particularly happy about is the form factor of the book - too many java books are tomes that risk breaking your wrist (or your foot if you drop it). There's a prevailing mindset in technical book publishing that the thicker the book, the better (the thicker the spine, the more bookstore shelf real estate you get for your book to advertise itself). Key Java is concise and focused, and the form factor reflects that; I carried it around in my large coat pocket to read as the mood struck me for a couple of weeks.

Just Buy It

This is one of the very, very few Java books on the market that will give you any new insight into using the language. In a very small space, it provides an amazing amount of detail - at both the low implementation level and the high architectural level. The chapters on memory and speed optimization alone make it worth the price. This book manages to say a lot with very few words. It runs completely against the grain of all the wordy, useless, and incorrect Java books out there, and every serious Java programmer should own it.

There's much, much more to Kleiber than the myth-making. At least there is now, thanks to Charles Barber's astonishing new book, Corresponding with Carlos: A Biography of Carlos Kleiber. Charles had a unique relationship with Kleiber. As a conducting student at Stanford University, with dazzling boldness and naivety, he wrote to Kleiber out of the blue and said he wanted to study with him. The key was Barber's use of humour and irony to attempt to elicit a response from Kleiber – it worked. Barber never formally became a student of Kleiber's (nobody ever did), but from 1989 until the maestro's death, he corresponded with the supposedly unknowable Carlos, and as well as vivid account of Kleiber's life, Barber's book publishes pretty well the complete letters he received. And they're a revelation. This is mainly a book so fascinating that for once the ‘impossible to put down’ cliché is appropriate. Charles Barber was, in 1989, a young music teacher and conductor who sent a short letter to Kleiber, and to his amazement received a reply a few days later. He wanted to be Kleiber’s student, but there could be no question of that. Instead, they became frequent correspondents, and all of Kleiber’s letters concerning music are published here, with enough of Barber’s to make the exchanges intelligible….What makes Kleiber’s correspondence with Barber especially interesting is that Barber regularly sent Kleiber video cassettes of the great conductors, eliciting a deluge of comments on their style, greatness (or weaknesses), and their music. Kleiber’s criticism alternates with his commentary on his own slender repertoire and his growing distaste for conducting….The first 180 pages are devoted to a biographical sketch, with many quotations from letters: illuminating, but I doubt whether many readers will be able to resist the temptation to leap ahead to the epistolary section. A Labor of Love that explains much about the Enigmatic Master

This has been a long time in the oven, but the pie is truly worth waiting for - and delicious! For Kleiber aficianados this book is pure GOLD.

This is no ordinary biography. Because of Kleiber's reclusiveness and unwillingness to give interviews to the press or potential biographers, the details of his early life are somewhat sketchy, the whole decade of his twenties and the dawn of his early career and the exact process by which he acquired the skills to go along with his great talent remain elusive. Barber offers the first English language attempt at a formal discussion. So far so good............

What is special about the book are the insights into Kleiber's psyche we can derive from the extensive correspondence that he and Barber kept up over many years. Barber as a student conductor had access to videos and recordings at Stanford University which he would shoot off to CK and these would provoke discussion of their contents, frequently to both insightful and very funny effect. These letters, faxes and postcards to Barber (as well as others to certain musicians and impresarios) portray Kleiber's complex personality in a way that enables the reader to understand the conductor as much more than the received wisdom of "weird, enigmatic, cancel-prone, skittish and indecipherable." Finally this is a chance to understand more about the man - which is what Biography is about.

There are numerous hysterically funny descriptions of fellow conductors and their perceived foibles, there is the well-known debunking of Celibidache, with a good deal more detail than I have seen before. The overarching themes in Kleiber's correspondence are his perpetual self-doubt, relentless self-criticism and search for perfection in performance. At the same time we learn much of what it means to be an artist, a performer and a musician in the jet set world. Kleiber is the antithesis to Gergiev who conducts a lot of things in a lot of places on a lot of occasions. Kleiber conducted hardly at all, and this book seeks with success to explain why.

Well done Mr Barber. You have done for Kleiber and his reputation what Oliver Daniel did for Stokowski in "Stokowski - A Counterpoint of View." You have shone a light and illuminated the life of the greatest conductor of the twentieth century, and you have done it well.

Recommended unreservedly. 300+ pages of gold. We Alberichs would give everything for this. So $75 is not so bad.

Bravo, Maestri!

First, viewed with a critical eye, my impressions about the book were a bit mixed, sort of like the book's narrative itself. The author, himself a conductor, is obviously a vigorous fan, so a neutral biography seems to be out of the question from the start. But who can blame him. There are many of us who love Carlos Kleiber as a medium of divine music, as well as his imperfect nature. It is not difficult to imagine him thinking similarly about Beethoven. The man's resting place in Slovenia which at every occasion provides a meditative journey of tranquility is perhaps the best indicator of Carlos' enigmatic and tormented character which nevertheless continues to inspire.

In any case, I do think that the author did a great job. Bravo, Maestro! His correspondence with Carlos is a treasure and he well knows it. But regardless of that the price of the book should not necessarily be in a class of Carlos' conducting fees. So, this is not a definite bio of Carlos Kleiber and the question is whether we're ever going to get one, considering the secretive nature of his being. But this book is fun, a lot of fun, many well known and less known anecdotes of the fascinating man and his world. His character simply radiates from the pages. There are many humorous treats which will be devoured by Kleiber's fans. I definitely propose watching, reading and listening to the sources mentioned in the book, and the read is an even bigger pleasure. The author did a good but limited effort with the bio part of the research, vastly inferior to say Osbourne's Karajan bio (a must read!) although the way I see it, this part, by no means a minor feat, is to be viewed merely as a prelude to the letters themselves. These are a treasure, that's for certain. They convey vividly Kleiber's complexity as a person, his playful side, formidable intellect as well as his hyperactive humor and self-doubt.

A fascinating perfectionist of a man indeed, and true to himself and the music he so loved. Another important stone in the mosaic of Carlitos' already stupendous pedigree.

Huge thumbs up for the loads of fun and joy that the book brings, big thumbs down for the price.

Kleiber lovers rejoice!

It's been a long wait, but finally we Kleiber addicts have been given a biography that amply rewards our patience.

Well, not 'given', exactly. It's a pricey book, but after only an hour with it I ordered two more copies for gifts. If you are a fellow Kleiber nut, this book is cheap at the price. If you've never quite understood why some of us go a bit strange on the subject, then you need this book even more than we nuts do.

Kleiber was simply the best conductor of the twentieth century, and that's a provable fact -- sort of. Here's the evidence. First, he was the highest paid conductor per concert. Any outfit would pay him almost any price thinking (correctly) that they had a bargain. That is, if he didn't cancel. He could get away with cancelling, and the cancellees would still come creeping back to him. He could demand fifteen or twenty rehearsals, and get them. Any other conductor would have to make do with maybe three. But not Kleiber.

The result was perfection, or as near as mortals get. But not just perfection; Kleiber could find something new and astonishing in the most thoroughly trodden works (Beethoven's Fifth!) and present the new insight not only perfectly, but also convincingly. It seemed he had a Fountain of Youth reserved for tattered old music scores; he would swish them in the Fountain and they would come out new and shiny. This was why people shelled out the (very) big bucks and endured all the foibles. Whatever the price, Kleiber came cheap. Much like this book.

"Corresponding with Carlos" is not quite a hagiography, though Dr. Barber definitely worships at the shrine. But I must insist: it's a very fine shrine, as good as you can get. But unlike the rest of us, Barber had a correspondence with Kleiber lasting well over a decade. These letters form the basis for an unusual biography, but Barber doesn't stop there. Knowing Kleiber gave him access to others who also knew Kleiber, and Barber has thoroughly mined every vein of ore available to him. We are treated to as complete a biography as we're ever likely to see.

But wait! There's more! The letters also contain fascinating discussions about music in general and certain works in particular; not ponderous appreciations of whole works, but the problems with them. It is unusual to hear a conductor wonder why nobody quite understands the importance of bar 147, or how to seat the cellos on stage, or advice on tempo at a certain moment. To hear (read) the things that concern a working conductor is to get a great look past the baton and beneath the tuxedo.

So was Kleiber a cranky, quirky recluse given to temper tantrums? Well, yes and no, but mostly no. He demanded perfection (that elusive grail) first of himself, then of performers, who worshiped him for it. His letters have insight, of course, but also some fine wit. And also quite a few very bad jokes. It's refreshing to know that his obsession with perfection did indeed have a very human boundary. Charles Barber includes a generous portion of these warts.

For many, Kleiber is the best conductor you've never heard of. Find him on You Tube conducting bonbons by Johan Strauss Jr. Play them first for the fun. Then play them again for the sound. Third time: watch Kleiber. Then you'll want to buy this book. Good for you.
